Maryville College claims USA South Men's Presidents Cup

(FAYETTEVILLE, N.C.) - Following the conclusion of the 2016-2017 season of USA South Athletic Conference competition, the final standings for the Overall, Men's and Women's Presidents Cups have been released. Piedmont College has captured both the Overall and Women's Cups while Maryville College earns the Men's Cup. This year is the 12th year the USA South will present an Overall, a Men's and a Women's Presidents Cup.

The USA South Presidents Cup symbolizes the league's top men's and women's athletic program each year. The Presidents Cup is awarded by a points system where the first-place team in each sport will be awarded the number of points that corresponds to the number of schools that sponsor teams in that sport. The second-place team receives one point less than the first-place team and so on, down to one point for the last place team that competes. Additionally, for all sports with the exception of football which has no post-season play, bonus points will be up for grabs. The team winning the USA South Tournament Championship will receive two bonus points for that sport while the runner-up will receive one bonus point. In the sports of golf and cross country, the athlete placing first will earn two bonus points for his/her institution while the runner-up will earn one bonus point. If athletes from the same institution place first and second, that institution will earn the two bonus points for the first-place finish only. Finally, for those sports with divisional standings, the Presidents Cup points are separated by divisions.

The awarding of an Overall Presidents Cup began at the conclusion of the 1978-79 season. Following the 2004-05 season, the Conference presented separate Men's and Women's Presidents Cups in lieu of an Overall Cup. The following year the Conference reinstated the Overall Cup along with the Men's and Women's Cups.

Piedmont laid claim to its first Overall Presidents Cup and its second consecutive Women's Presidents Cup, the third in program history. These two cups raise the Lions' total to four USA South Presidents Cups in the program's history. Piedmont captured USA South regular season championships in the sports of Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country, Softball and Men's Tennis. Additionally, the Lions earned bonus points thanks to postseason performances in the sports of Men's Cross Country, Women's Cross Country, Women's Soccer, Women's Basketball, Baseball and Women's Lacrosse.

Maryville captured the Men's Presidents Cup for the first time in program history. This is the first USA South Presidents Cup of any kind for the Scots. Maryville earned regular season championships in Football, Men's Basketball and Men's Soccer while adding bonus points from Daniel Beckett's win at the Men's Cross Country championship as well as the men's soccer team's Conference tournament title. During the early 2000's, Maryville College athletics dominated the Great South Athletic Conference with 58 conference championships and 15 different Presidents Cups over a dozen seasons. Since 2012 the Scots have earned 15 USA South conference titles.

"I am excited for our institution and our student-athletes to earn this distinction," stated Maryville College Director of Athletics Kandis Schram. "We strive for excellence on and off the playing venues and we have great respect for the quality of competition this league offers. The USA South Presidents Cup symbolizes the culture of excellence across our entire department."
