  • Maryville and Huntingdon Tied Atop League Preseason Football Poll

    (FAYETTEVILLE, NC) - Huntingdon College, under the direction of 14th-year Head Coach Mike Turk, and Maryville College, led by third-year Head Coach Shaun Hayes, tied atop the 2017 USA South Athletic Conference Preseason Football Coaches Poll. The Hawks and Scots shared last year's USA South championship but it was Huntingdon who earned the Conference's automatic bid to the NCAA Division III Tournament by way of its 28-24 win over Maryville during regular season play. The Hawks fell in the first round of the playoffs and finished with a 9-2 overall record while Maryville completed the 2016 campaign with an 8-2 overall mark. The USA South championship was the second consecutive for Huntingdon and the third for Maryville in its history.

    Maryville College rising senior Blake Bowman has been named to the 2016-17 NABC Honors Court. In order to be named to the Honors Court, a student-athlete must meet a high standard of academic criteria. They must be a varsity basketball player with junior or senior academic standing. The recipient must have a cumulative grade point average of 3.2 or higher at the conclusion of the 2016-17 academic year while representing a NCAA Division I, II, III, or NAIA Division I or II institution with a NABC member coach.

    Maryville College Football and the Fighting Scots Gridiron Club will be hosting the 2017 East Tennessee 7 on 7 Perimeter Passing Day on Saturday, July 15th . The event will feature two sessions. The first session will begin at 9:00 am and conclude at 1:00 pm. The second session will begin at 1:00 pm and conclude at 5:00 pm.

    Maryville College rising senior Rachel Taylor, a soccer goalkeeper in the fall and a softball first baseman in the spring for the Scots, is embarking on an international experience beginning Monday, June 5th. Through Beyond Sports Tours, Rachel will spend twelve days in Cape Town, South Africa practicing, enjoying international competition, and introducing softball through clinics at Turfhall Stadium.

    The Maryville College athletic department honored five outstanding young men as nominees for the 2017 Male J.D. Davis Award. Nominees for the department’s top male honor to senior student-athletes at Maryville College included: Sean Hagstrom (Cross Country), Joe Jones (Baseball), Caleb Lucas (Soccer), Nick Myers (Football), and Tyler Spicer (Basketball). These young men displayed great leadership and desire to attain their personal best while making their programs better daily. The 2017 Male J.D. Davis award winner, selected by the MC athletic staff, was Nick Myers.

Piedmont College has captured both the Overall and Women's Cups while Maryville College earns the Men's Cup. This year is the 12th year the USA South will present an Overall, a Men's and a Women's Presidents Cup.
