Scots close out 2018 campaign with 4-2 loss at No. 17 Methodist

The Maryville College baseball team closed their 2018 spring season with a 4-2 loss at the hands of No. 17 Methodist University in Fayetteville, North Carolina on Sunday afternoon.

 

The Monarchs got on the scoreboard in the fifth when Ethan Carmack singled up the middle to score Parker Clayton who earlier singled off Scots' starter Christian Poulsen.

 

Methodist's Tucker Criswell homered to left field off Poulsen's first offering in the sixth to make the score 2-0 before the hosts added a third run on a safety squeeze by Elliot Manley scoring Davis Cass.

 

Maryville's Mike Homan singled to lead off the seventh and advanced to second on a Joey Tomlinson ground out. Caleb Adams (2-for-4 at the plate) promptly singled up the middle to plate Homan for the Scots first run.

 

MC's Zach McGee took over for Poulsen in the seventh. Poulsen finished with six innings of work on the mound scattering seven hits and allowing a pair of earned runs. The first batter McGee face, Ethan Carmack, took the lefty over the right field wall to make the score 4-1. McGee finished with a pair of inning on the mound surrendering only one hit.

 

The Scots tallied their final run the ninth when Mike Homan (2-for-4 on the day) singled and advanced home on an Eric Hart RBI ground out.

 

The loss by the Scots pushes their winless streak to eight after jumping out to an early 26-5 record and No.17 national ranking. Maryville closes their season 26-13 while the victory pushes Methodist to 30-11 on the season.
