The Maryville College Fighting Scots football squad was picked second in the 2018 USA South Coaches Poll on Wednesday, as MC tallied one first-place vote.
The Scots tallied a 5-5 record last season, while going 3-4 within the USA South Athletic Conference. Three of Maryville's five losses came with a touchdown or less margin.
The Orange and Garnet, under the direction of fourth-year head coach Shaun Hayes, will look to continue their offensive attack this season, as the squad amassed 382.6 yards per contest in 2017. MC scored 29.4 points per contest, while going 4-2 on MC's historic Honaker Field.
Maryville tallied 15 turnovers on the defensive side of the ball, while recording 61 tackles for loss. They had 21 sacks, while holding opponents to just over 300 yards per game.
Huntingdon College, under the direction of 15th-year head coach Mike Turk, was atop the 2018 USA South poll. The Hawks are the three-time defending USA South Champions after producing a perfect 7-0 League record to go along with a 9-2 overall mark in 2017. Huntingdon earned the league's bid to the NCAA Tournament but fell in the first round of the playoffs to Berry, 34-20.
The Hawks will look to become the second team in USA South history to win four consecutive football titles (Christopher Newport, 2001-2004). Huntingdon currently finds itself receiving votes in the recently released D3football.com Preseason Top-25 poll.
The USA South welcomed Brevard College last season. The Tornados are currently reclassifying from NCAA Division II status, but this year, they are included in the preseason poll and eligible for regular season championship honors. Brevard still will not be eligible to represent the conference in the NCAA Tournament until full DIII membership is established.
The 2018 USA South football schedule kicks off on Thursday, August 30 as LaGrange travels to Birmingham Southern in non-Conference play.
Maryville will travel to Berry College on Sept. 1 to kick off the season. Kickoff in Rome, Ga. is slated for 6 p.m.
