Scots fall to Berry College in season opener, 38-3

Maryville College opened the 2018 season with a tough loss to Berry College in Rome, Ga.

The Vikings held the Maryville to just a field goal in the opener, as the Scots fell 38-3.

MC's offense struggled to open the game, tallying just 22 yards of offense in the opening stanza. Nelson Smith tossed 11 yards in the first half, while four different Scots' rushers added 11 yards across the ground.

Maryville averaged 3.4 yards per play in the game, as they totaled 263 yards for the contest.

The Vikings totaled 368 total yards, as 265 of those came through the air. Berry was also aided by two interceptions that totaled 101 yards and a touchdown.

Maryville saw four quarterbacks in the contest, as Adam Diggs led the way. Diggs went 7-of-14 for 79 yards, while Nelson Smith went 11-for-18 for 62 yards.

The Scots' offense across the ground struggled, as Trevor Thomas led the way with seven carries for 31 yards. In all, eight different rushers tallied 79 rushing yards.

Tate Adcock led the way for Berry College, as the quarterback went 20-for-33 for 258 yards and a pair of touchdowns.

Berry College would strike quick, as C.J. Stone returned the opening kick 51 yards to the MC 43-yard line. The Scots' defense would hold, however, forcing a 45-yard field goal from Trey Gregory. The kick rang true, as the Vikings took a 3-0 lead on the eight-play, 15-yard drive.

Maryville would find their first opportunity with 5:28 showing in the first quarter. The Scots' eight-play, 18-yard drive stalled at the Berry College 27-yard line. Ian Hubbs' 44-yard field goal attempt sailed wide left to leave the score 3-0.

A 69-yard connection between Tate Adcock and Michael Zhu just three plays later would put Berry College in position. Five plays later, Joey Connors would cover the final yard for a 10-0 Viking lead.

With 13:25 left in the second quarter, Adcock would lead the Vikings on another scoring drive. The five-play, 76-yard drive was capped with Adcock finding Mason Kinsey for a 36-yard touchdown pass. The throw would make the score 17-0 at the half.

MC would find the scoreboard in the third quarter. Diggs led the Scots on a 10-play, 46-yard drive that would stall at the Vikings' 4-yard line. Hubbs would notch the 21-yard attempt to cut the score 17-3 with 6:24 left in the third quarter.

Adcock would find Kinsey again for another long touchdown with 1:47 left in the third. The 46-yard toss made the score 24-3.

Berry would add another pair of scores in the fourth quarter that included a 60-yard interception return to make the final score, 38-3.

Maryville will return home next Saturday for the home opener. MC will take on Centre College at 1 p.m. on historic Honaker Field.
