The Maryville College men's basketball team finished with five double-digit scorers in route to an 83-75 USA South road victory over Covenant College in Lookout Mountain, Georgia on Tuesday evening.
MC's leading scorer, Calvin Songster, deposited a team-high 17 points on 6-of-9 shooting. Dante Hoppa (16 points) went 6-for-12 from the free throw line while bringing down a team-high seven rebounds. Kaleb Estes and Tyler Spicer each posted 11 points on a combined 6-of-16 shooting effort while Colt Nokes patrolled the paint with 10 points on 4-of-5 shooting while matching Hoppa's effort on the boards with seven. Coach Randy Lambert also received key minutes from Blake Bowman and Chris Watson who combined for 16 points.
Maryville went to the half with a 37-31 lead and closed out the second half (46-44) with a 52% shooting effort while limiting Covenant to a 48% success rate to secure the eight point victory.
Covenant (7-6, 1-2 USA South) had four players in double digits. The Georgian Scots were paced by Berto Dryden's 28 points on 9-of-18 shooting. Patjo Twagirayezu added 15 points and seven rebounds. Bailey Spragg and Caleb Haynes each deposited 10 points with Haynes finishing with a game-high nine rebounds.
The Maryville victory gives Coach Lambert his 670th career victory and their 11-1 start matches the best beginning of a Scots season under his guidance since the 2001-2002 squad also went 11-1. The school mark for the best start is 13-1 set by the NCAA "Elite Eight" team of 1991-1992.
MC will travel to Greensboro College and Methodist University for a pair of key USA South challenges this weekend.
