Maryville College overcame a 13-point deficit and an 18-0 Sewanee run on Tuesday night to earn the first victory of the 2017 season, 81-73.
The Orange and Garnet went 30-of-39 at the charity stripe in the game for a 76.9 percent outing, as they outrebounded the Tigers, 42-34
After Sewanee's Adrian Thomas scored the opening bucket of the game, Maryville would use an 8-0 run to take an early lead, 8-2. Bowman and Songster scored a pair of baskets each in the run, before the Tigers would roar.
Sewanee mounted an 18-0 march over the next 5 minutes for a 20-8 advantage. The Tigers went 4-for-4 from beyond the arc in the run that included a pair of Luke Smith treys.
Maryville's Tanner Spalding would end the rally at the 11:44 mark with a spinning lay-in to cut Sewanee's lead to 10, 20-10. The Tigers were holding a 53.8 percent shooting percentage at the time, while holding the Scots to a 28.6 percent clip.
Maryville would cut away at that lead in the remainder of the first half for a 35-28 score, as Bowman finished with a near double-double. He had 11 rebounds, nine points and a trio of blocks at the break, while Songster added six. The Scots went 10-of-29 (34.5 percent) from the field, while knocking down just one trey in the final seconds for a 10 percent clip from beyond the arc.
Sewanee saw Adrian Thomas finish the half with eight points and six boards. Hunter Buescher had seven points, as Cam Caldwell added seven rebounds to lead the Tigers. They shot 12-of-31 (38.7 percent) in the first half, while posting a 45.5 percent outing (5-of-11) in the first half.
The Scots flipped the tables in the second half. Trailing by 13, 52-39, with 12:10 left in the ballgame, Maryville marched on a 14-3 run to cut it to one point, 55-54.
Buescher sank a lay-in at the 6:44 mark, before making it an old-fashioned 3-point play with a free throw and a 58-54 Sewanee lead.
The Scots – led by a pair of treys from Songster – followed that bucket with a 14-0 rally of their own for a 68-58 lead. Maryville would go 13-of-16 at the charity stripe down the final 1:43 for the 81-73 victory.
MC (1-2) saw Songster score 24 points with a pair of assists. He shot 3-for-5 from beyond the arc, while going 5-of-6 at the free-throw line. Bowman had 18 rebounds for Maryville, while going for 11 points, three blocks and a pair of steals.
Dante Hoppa had a huge second half, bucketing 16 points with nine rebounds and four steals, as he went 10-of-12 from the charity stripe. Kaleb Estes had nine points, as Danterrius Bray added eight. Emanuelle Garcia had seven points off the bench for Maryville.
The Scots shot 23-of-56 (41.1 percent) while bucketing five treys at a 31.1 percent clip.
Sewanee (1-3) shot 25-of-57 (43.9 percent) while going 9-of-22 from beyond the arc. They were led by Buescher's 27 points on his 11-of-13 performance at the free-throw line, as he added four rebounds, two assists and two steals. Thomas had 15 points with seven rebounds, while Smith added 11 points and five assists.
Maryville will look next to the LaGrange Invitational on Saturday and Sunday, Nov. 25-26. The Scots will take on Oglethorpe University in LaGrange, Ga. on Saturday for a 2 p.m. tipoff.
