The Maryville College Men's basketball team earned the 2018 Tampa Bay Shootout title with a 71-62 victory in the championship match-up with Otterbein University on Sunday afternoon in Tampa, Florida.
The Scots' Emier Bowman finished with a double-double after depositing 15 points on 6-of-12 shooting while bringing down a game-high 15 rebounds.
Maryville finished the first half trailing 38-35 despite hitting 41% from the floor. Otterbein shot 43% that included a 4-for-10 effort from beyond the arc.
MC outpaced Otterbein 36-24 in the closing period. The Scots hit almost 46% from the field while Otterbein connected on only 28% of their shots including a 0-for-11 success rate from long distance.
Otterbein closed the gap to only three (61-58) at the 7:10 mark following a 10-4 run. With key baskets by Dante Hoppa and Joshua Brooks, MC finished the hard-fought victory with a 10-4 run to seal the victory.
Otterbein (4-8) was paced by Jay Joseph's double-double of 12 points and 11 rebounds. Justin Carter led all scorers with 16 points on 6-of-14 shooting.
Maryville (6-4) capitalized off Kaleb Estes' 16 points off the bench. He was 5-for14 from the field while also collecting five rebounds. Bowman's double-double was strengthened by Calvin Songster's 15-point effort on 6-of-14 shooting. Dante Hoppa added 12 points and eight rebounds for the Scots.
MC will put their five-game win streak to the test when they host Piedmont College on Wednesday, January 2nd at 3:00 p.m.
