Scots finish fifth in USA South Championship behind consistent rounds from Compliment, Manuel

The Maryville College men's golf program finished the third and final round of the 2018 USA South Men's Golf Championship at Highland Country Club in LaGrange, Georgia with a 308 placing fifth among the dozen highly-ranked league opponents.

North Carolina Wesleyan claimed the team title with a 294-305-293 (892). Their final round of 293 was the lowest team effort throughout the three-day challenge. Maryville's fifth place finish is the highest finish in the conference since joining the league in 2012-2013. The Scots finished sixth in the 2014-2015 league tournament. MC's combined score of (909) 302-299-308 is the best finish since 2014-2015's squad that posted a 925.

NC Wesleyan's Grady Anderson took individual top honors with a two under-par 68-73-73 (214). Maryville's Garrett Compliment finished fifth overall with a six over-par 73-75-74 (222). Fellow Fighting Scot Wil Manuel improved each day with a 78-74-73 (225) to finish 11th overall among the 48 league challengers. Compliment's final score of 222 is the school's second-best score in conference tournament play just behind Reid Henderson's 220 in 2015. Manuel's 225 is the third best collection of rounds in MC's tournament action within the USA South.

Garrett Compliment was named to the USA South All-Tournament Team joining Joel Thornton (2014) and Reid Henderson (2015) as the third Fighting Scot golfer to be honored by the league.

Helping Maryville finish fifth included scores from Tyler Bray (23rd) 73-74-82 (229), Doug Whitten (26th) 78-76-79 (233), and DJ Shelton (45th) 81-80-86 (247).

"We had a good finish this week," stated Maryville College Director of Golf Ron Waters. "We didn't play as well today as we had hoped, but a fifth place finish in a league like ours is something to be proud of. I feel like we're just a small step from being one of the really top teams in the conference so we're looking forward to being even better next year. Congratulations to Garrett Compliment for making the all-tournament team. It is a great accomplishment. He played very  solid for three consecutive days."

Coach Waters added, "We're sad to be losing our lone senior Doug Whitten but I believe our future is pretty bright."
