Scots claim USA South Western Division with 4-1 win over Piedmont

Maryville College downed Piedmont College on Wednesday night, as the Scots claimed the USA South Western Division Title with a 9-1-1 conference mark.

The Scots bested the Lions by a score of 4-1, earning the victory in come-from-behind fashion. Maryville tallied a trio of goals in the second half in the win.

The Orange and Garnet earns a No. 1 seed in the USA South tournament, which is slated to begin on Saturday, Oct. 28, weather permitting. With that seed, MC will host the opening round.

With the 2017 Regular Season title, Maryville has now won back-to-back USA South Regular Season crowns. That's the first back-to-back title for the Scots since winning five straight in the Great South Athletic Conference between 2007 and 2011.

Piedmont College struck first on a hand ball in the box. Chase Cane took the penalty kick, depositing it in the middle-right of the net, as MC keeper Ryan Jorgensen dove left. Piedmont led 1-0 in the 10th minute.

Maryville would add the equalizer in the 41st minute. Michael Quatrano passed to the penalty mark in the box, as Milan Card collected it. He sent a left-footer into the bottom left of the net to make the halftime score, 1-1.

The Scots would outshoot the Lions, 11-2 in the opening half, as they posted three corner kick to none.

In the second half, it was all Maryville. The Scots posted a trio of goals for the USA South victory.

Gavin Dougherty struck in the 47th minute just 1:38 into the second half. A throw in from Chris Fernandez was headed back to him on the right side of the goal. Fernandez collected it, tossing a cross to the left side of the box. Dougherty would use a right-footed blast from the 18 to make the score 2-1 with his first goal of the year.

In the 68th minute, Andrew Sullivan would find the back of the net. Randy Reichenberger would toss a cross to the left side of the box from the right, as Sullivan would use a one-touch kick. He sent it into the lower left of the net for his second goal of the season, as the Scots extended their lead, 3-1.

Jameson Elmore would add his fifth goal of the 2017 campaign in the 72nd minute. Aaron Rucker would push a pass forward from the midfield circle, as Elmore outran a trio of defenders. With the goalie coming out, the sophomore used a sliding kick under him for a 4-1 MC victory.

Maryville (14-2-1, 9-1-1 USA South) outshot Piedmont (9-6, 6-5) by a margin of 23-3. The Scots recorded five corner kicks to zero from Piedmont, as MC's only miscue was the early penalty kick.

Maryville saw eight different Scots get in on the scoring action Wednesday, as Johnny Rakhmonberdiev led the squad with five shots – a trio on goal. Bret Thomas and Reichenberger each had three shots, while Fernandez tallied a pair.

For Piedmont, Chase Cane added the only goal. He had two of the Lions' three shots on the night, as Max Neal added the other.
