Reichenberger's heroics continue; Scots advance to USA South Semifinals, 2-1

Randy Reichenberger scored the Golden Goal in Saturday's Senior Night to clinch the USA South Western Division Regular Season Title, before he continued his heroics with the game-winning goal on Tuesday night to send the Scots to the USA South Semifinals.

The senior from Hendersonville, Tenn. scored the match's final goal with just 37 ticks showing on the clock. He had a brace on the night, as Maryville upended LaGrange College, 2-1, in the USA South Quarterfinal matchup.

The victory now allows the Scots to host the remainder of the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament in the shadows of the Great Smoky Mountains. The tournament semifinals and finals will be played on Friday and Saturday, Nov. 2-3.

LaGrange College jumped on the board early in the opening minutes of the first half. Connor Liney took a long throw in from the right side, tossing it into the box just in front of the net. Matthew Fritts recorded his second goal of the season with a diving header from 5 yards out. Just 2:01 into the first-round match, the Panthers led 1-0.

Maryville College found the equalizer in the 23rd minute. Cole Hilton pass a ball from right to left in the middle of the field. Bralen Clouse collected it on the right side, lofting a high pass to the middle of the box. Reichenberger – the reigning USA South Player of the Week – took it off his chest before launching a hard right-footed attempt into the upper right corner of the net to make the score 1-all.

That's where the score would remain at the break, as MC held a 6-2 advantage on shots. Maryville had a pair of shots on goal to just one for LaGrange in the first 45 minutes, as the Scots held three corners to none.

The Panthers were hindered by an offsides penalty in the opening stanza.

Reichenberger's heroics would come alive again with just 37 seconds left. Chris Fernandez blasted a header from the middle of the box, as a LaGrange defender knocked it away. Reichenberger collected the rebound in the right side of the box, launching a laser off his right foot to the lower left corner for the game-winning score.

Maryville outshot LaGrange, 15-5, as the Scots held seven shots on goal to just three for the Panthers.

MC (12-3-1) saw Reichenberger tally four shots – each of those on goal – and he accounted for more than half of the Scots' attempts on frame. He had a pair of goals, while Clouse and Cole Hilton had assists.

Chris Fernandez, Trevor McDonald, Bret Thomas and Clouse had a pair of shots each in Maryville's advancement.

Keeper Ryan Jorgensen had a pair of saves for the Scots during his 90 minutes in goal.

LaGrange (10-9) saw Jude McEvoy with three of the five shots for LaGrange. He had one shot on goal.
