Records, Personal Best Times Highlight NCAA Regionals for Scots

The Maryville College cross country finished their 2017 fall season at the NCAA Division South/Southeast Regionals in Newport News, Virginia on Saturday.

 

The Scots' men completed the 8K challenge in a team average of 34:17 finishing 28th of 32 regional institutions. The Captains of Christopher Newport University, running on their home course, took top team honors qualifying for nationals with an average team time of 24:34.

 

CNU's Grayson Reid claimed individual honors setting the pace with a 24:01 first-place finish among over 220 runners.

 

Maryville's top finisher was sophomore Daniel Beckett. The Oak Ridge native ran a 26:34 for an 86th place finish. At the conclusion of his second collegiate campaign, this two-time All-USA South runner established a new 8K team record eclipsing Sean Hagstrom's 27:16. Sophomore Ryan Lay continued to improve his personal best times with each race finishing with a 30:18 time. Sophomore Chase Chastain added a 32:35 effort to the Scots' team score, his seasonal best time.

 

According to Coach Tyson Murphy the remainder of the men's team was misdirected during the end of the course causing the remainder of the squad to run an additional lap affecting their times and team average.

 

The MC women finished the 6K regional in an average team time of 25:54 for a 29th place among 34 competing institutions. The team time eclipses the new school mark set just two weeks ago.

 

Trinity (Texas) earned the team title with an average finish time of 22:02.

 

Individual honors went to Emory University's Gabrielle Stravach with a 20:59 pace among 240 runners.

 

Maryville sophomore Susanna Cook was the Scots top finisher with a 24:55. The time was her second fastest finish of the season. Junior Taylor Williams crossed the finish line in 25:12. Freshman Lea Mulligan broke her personal best time by more than a minute with a 25:46 finish. Kaitlyn Carringer added a 26:05 effort. Maddie Zawisza finished the season with a 27:27 pace. Additional standout performers for Coach Murphy's squad were seniors Chandler Chastain and Molly Ridgeway. Chastain (28:00) and Ridgeway (28:22) both finishing their careers with season best times.
