Maryville College placed seventh overall in the USA South Athletic Conference Championships on Friday, as junior Daniel Beckett earned All-Conference accolades with a top-10 finish.
The Oak Ridge, Tenn. native finished the 8K course with an eighth-place ranking. He averaged 3:29 per kilometer to earn USA South All-Conference Second Team accolades.
"It was a great race for him," Head Coach Tyson Murphy said. "We can compare ourselves to several athletes and competitors that we see throughout the season. He's gone back-and-forth with a few key competitors, and he really put together a great race today, start to finish. He's just been a really, really consistent runner throughout the season. He peaked on the right day for that eighth-place finish. We're proud of his leadership, and we're proud of his run today."
Beckett ran a 27:48.8 on the Maryville College course, as he led the Scots to their top-10 finish in the 12-team field.
The Oak Ridge High School product was also named to the USA South's All-Sportsmanship squad for the 2018 campaign.
In all, six of the seven MC runners tallied personal records in the championship race. Murphy said he was pleased with the improvement he's seen from his squad throughout the grueling schedule.
"We've been building all season," the head coach said. "Our guy's team, from the beginning, was about training some inexperienced runners up in the back half of our race. Daniel leads the way as a consistent scorer for us, but Ryan Lay ran a really strong race and a personal course record today. Richard [Martin], our number three guy, came in with a new personal record. He's just been getting stronger all year. Cooper Harrison in the four spot had a fantastic race, taking two more minutes off his PR, and then, Jacob Scrhamm coming in at fifth. Six out of our seven guys all had season bests, personal course bests or personal bests. The guys did everything they could do, and we're proud when we've done everything we can do at the end of a race."
Lay finished the USA South meet ranked 48th individually, as the junior from Maryville, Tenn. posted a time of 30:51.5. Martin finished just three spots behind his teammate in 51st with a time of 31:34.7.
Harrison finished in 66th at a time of 33:18.0, while teammate Schramm was just 40 second behind him. The Knoxville, Tenn. junior ran a time of 33:58.8.
Berea College took the USA South Championship as a squad, as the Mountaineers saw each of the first four runners to cross the line. Tanner Carson won the individual race at 26:24.2, as Logan McKenzie ranked second at 26:49.8. Sair Salgado's 27:15.1 took third, while Tyler Little ranked fourth at 27:16.7.
Berea had five of the top six runners, as they placed six in the top 12.
Covenant College took second as a team, while Methodist University ranked third.
Covenant's Nate Collins ranked fifth individually, as Berea's Landon Bond was sixth. Pfeiffer University's Devon Williams was seventh, while Beckett rounded out the top eight.
Maryville College will look next to the NCAA Regional Championships in Rome, Ga. on Nov. 10. Murphy said he expects the squad to gain key experience in the NCAA race at Berry College.
