The USA South Athletic Conference has announced their performers of the week and Maryville College's Nicole Blackburn has been named the league's softball pitcher of the week.
The sophomore from Knoxville, Tennessee earned two complete-game shutout victories in three appearances last week for the Scots versus USA South competition. Blackburn tossed a total of 14.0 shutout innings while allowing 12 hits and two walks with ten strikeouts. In a 9-0, five-inning, victory over LaGrange, Blackburn allowed four hits without a walk and five strikeouts. In a 2-0 win over Huntingdon, Blackburn allowed seven hits and two walks with four strikeouts. In a 6-3 loss to Huntingdon, Blackburn came on in relief to pitch two scoreless innings, allowing one hit with one strikeout.
The Scots are 15-5 on the season and pacing the USA South western division with a 6-2 league record. Blackburn is 4-2 on the season with a 1.25 ERA in a team-high 36 innings of work. She leads the squad in complete games (3) and strikeouts (28) while holding opponents to a .214 batting average.
Coach Leah Kelley was excited about Nicole's performance this weekend. "Nicole was outstanding this weekend. She has been consistent all year long. She is someone we can rely on to keep batters off balance and scatter hits."
Maryville will prepare to take on USA South foe Covenant College on Wednesday in Lookout Mountain, Georgia. Game times are set for 2:00 and 4:00.
