The USA South has released their top performers of the week and Maryville College freshman centerfielder Ashton Hayden was named the league's rookie player of the week.
The freshman outfielder from Hendersonville, Tennessee went a combined 11-for-18 (.611) with a .611 on-base percentage and a .611 slugging percentage out of the leadoff position to go along with two runs scored, three RBI and five stolen bases as the Scots earned a 2-2 record last week versus USA South competition. In a doubleheader sweep of Covenant, Hayden was a combined 5-for-9 with one run scored, two RBI and four stolen bases. In two losses to Meredith, Hayden was a combined 6-for-9 with one run scored, one run batted in and one stolen base.
"Ashton has excelled lately after taking on the role as a leadoff hitter," stated MC head softball coach Leah Kelley. "She is one of the most consistent players I've ever coached. Every day at practice and during every game I know what to expect from her. She is just a freshman and I expect her to be one of the best players in the country before her career is over."
The Scots are 17-7 on the season and 8-4 in USA South play.
While roaming centerfield for the Scots, Ashton is presently hitting .429 for the season with a .435 on-base percentage. She leads the team in runs scored (21) and hits (36).
Maryville is preparing to travel to Atlanta, Georgia on Tuesday to challenge nationally ranked Emory University in a non-conference match-up.
