The Maryville College softball team dropped a pair of USA South games at Averett University on Saturday afternoon in Danville, Virginia.
In the series opener, Maryville fell to the Cougars 6-2.
The Scots' lead was short lived as the Cougars posted three runs in the bottom of the first. Jessica Long scored on a Nicole Cauthen fielder's choice. A bases-loaded walk to Andrea Grant plated AU's second run. A bases-loaded hit batter sent the Cougars third run home.
An unearned run in the second inning gave Averett a 4-1 advantage.
Maryville closed the gap to 4-2 in the fifth when Christina White scored on a passed ball.
Averett tacked on insurance runs in the bottom of the fifth and sixth to complete the games scoring. Taylor Hodges recorded an RBI double in the fifth while Kaitlyn Aherron also laced a double scoring the Cougars final run.
Maryville managed seven hits off Cougar starter Taylor Bailey. Bailey tossed a complete game forcing nine fly ball outs while inducing 11 ground ball outs.
MC's Casey Joliff was the lone Scot with a pair of hits.
Maryville's Nicole Blackburn suffered the loss on the mound after allowing three earned runs in only 2/3 of an inning.
The loss in game one extended MC's winless streak to seven.
In the series finale, the Cougars completed the sweep with a 6-5 victory, pushing Maryville's losing streak to eight games. A four-run fourth provided all Averett needed to earn the win.
A bases-loaded walk gave the Cougars a 1-0 lead in the second inning.
AU's big fourth inning began with an unearned run on an MC miscue. Jessica Long recorded a sacrifice fly to make the score 3-2. A two-out single by Samantha Hall sent Brianna Harris home with the Cougar's fourth run of the game. Hall would later score in the inning on a Kaitlyn Aherron RBI single through the left side. With Averett's scoring complete, Maryville looked for a late rally.
Maryville tallied an unearned run on a Cougar error in the fifth and Rachel Taylor tallied a bases-loaded walk to score Casey Joliff in the sixth to make the score 5-4 in favor of the hosts.
Kaitlyn Aherron shutout the Scots in their final at-bat to preserve the win for Averett.
Maryville's 11-hit attack was paced by Christen Torres and Casey Joliff who each posted a pair of hits.
The sweep moves Maryville to 17-13 and 8-8 in the USA South. Averett's pair of wins pushes the Cougars to 17-15 and 9-5 in league action.
The Scots will look to rebound with a tough USA South challenge on Friday in Demorest, Georgia against Piedmont College.
