A late rally and numerous errors in the top of the seventh proved costly for the Scots in game two of the best-of-three series, as the Scots lost their 2-1 lead.
Piedmont would score eight runs in the top of the seventh, taking the win, 9-2, over Maryville.
The Lions and the Scots will play the rubber match of the opening round of the conference tournament tomorrow, April 9. First pitch is slated for 1 p.m. in Demorest, Ga.
Maryville struck first in the bottom of the second inning. Alexus Murray doubled, before advancing on the throw to third, while Morgan Brewer tried to extend the play at home. Aly Snider used a sacrifice fly to left to score MC's Murray, as the Scots led 2-0 after two innings.
The Scots would strike again in the third, this time with a two-out rally. Ashton Hayden singled to left, before stealing second. Jenna Roberts scored Hayden with an RBI single up the middle, as Maryville held a 2-0 advantage going to the fourth.
An error proved costly for the Scots in the top of the sixth. Allyson Gentry reached on an infield error to lead off the inning, before Hannah Hoban doubled to center to put runners on second and third. Josie Coker's sacrifice fly plated Gentry for a 2-1 ball game going to the bottom of the sixth.
Again, an error would play a role in the top of the seventh. A Esakoff singled up the middle to put a runner on with no outs. A. Owens laid down a sacrifice bunt, but the throw sailed high to first. Both runners advanced, leaving runners on second and third with no outs in the 2-1 game. Haley Hixon's two-RBI double to left-center gave Piedmont the lead, 3-2, as both runners scored. Hixon would advance to third on a wild pitch, before Gentry's RBI single to center scored Hixon. Hoban's double to left-center would put runners at second and third with only one out. Jessica Bagwell used a two-RBI triple to left to score both Hoban and Gentry. Becka Ross doubled to center to score Bagwell, before an error and an RBI single from Owens would add two more. Five of Piedmont's eight runs in the inning were unearned, as they took the win, 9-2, behind their late rally.
The Scots were led by Murray's 2-for-3 day, as she added a run. Morgan Brewer and Christina White each went 2-for-3, while Roberts and Hayden tallied hits. Roberts and Snider each had an RBI, as Hayden scored a run.
Piedmont had a 10-hit afternoon, as they were led by Hixon's 2-for-4 day with two RBI and a run. Hoban was 2-for-4 with a run, as Gentry went 1-for-2 with an RBI and a pair of runs. Bagwell was 1-for-4 with two RBI and a run, while Esakoff was 1-for-4 with two runs and an RBI on the afternoon.
