WIN THE MOMENT: MC ousts top-ranked Piedmont from USA South Tourney

Maryville College ousted the top-ranked team, Piedmont College, from the USA South Athletic Conference Tournament on Sunday, after defeating the Lions, 5-3.

The Scots left 10 runners on base during the elimination game, before finding their rhythm in the bottom of the sixth inning.

After going scoreless through five complete innings, Piedmont stuck first with a three-run top of the sixth, as things looked bleak for MC. The Scots would tally a five-run bottom of the inning to knock off the top-ranked school.

"All year long, we have faced adversity and have had tough moments," Head Coach Leah Kelley said. "This past week, we took a step back and realized we just need to win moments and make the game bigger than it is. So, that was our focus going into this first round — 'Win The Moment.' My team fought today, and they played with passion and heart. Everyone stepped up. There is no better time then right now to see everything coming together."

Maryville's Morgan Corland closed the door in the top of the seventh, securing her complete game win.

The sophomore hurled 7.0 innings, while allowing just eight hits. She walked only one runner, while striking out a pair.

Piedmont struck first in the top of the sixth. A single by Haley Hixon and a double by Hannah Hoban put runners on second and third. Josie Coker used a two-RBI double to left to score Hixon and pinch runner Madison Garrett.  Jessica Bagwell doubled down the left-field line to score Coker, as the Lions took control, 3-0.

Errors aided MC in the bottom of the inning, after a double by Christen Torres. Christina White was safe on an error, before Ashton Hayden singled to left to load the bases. Jenna Roberts used a sacrifice fly to right to score Torres, before Rachel Taylor was safe on an error that would have been the third out of the inning. Hayden and White both scored, before Alexus Murray would plate Morgan Brewer and Taylor for the 5-3 victory.

Maryville (20-17) was led by Roberts 2-for-3 effor with an RBI. Hayden went 2-for-4 with a run, while Essence Strambler was 2-for-3. Taylor, Brewer and Torres was 1-for-3 with a run scored, while Murray and Snider each added hits. Murray added a pair of RBI, while White scored a run for Maryvile in the 11-hit day.

Piedmont (25-14) was led by Coker's 2-for-3 day, as she tallied two RBI and a run. Hixon was 2-for-4 with a run scored to lead Piedmont's eight-run day.

Maryville will look next to the USA South Tournament in LaGrange, Ga. After defeating the Lions, the Scots will earn a buy in the tournament.
