Maryville College's vie for a USA South Conference Championship fell just short on Saturday afternoon, as the Scots rally fell just short, 3-2, in the bottom of the seventh inning.
The Scots would load the bases in the bottom of the seventh, but their rally would fall just short. Maryville scored one run in the inning to cut the lead to one, but a controversial call in the bottom of the third would leave the game in question.
MC had an impressive tournament, however, advancing all the way to Championship Saturday as the No. 6-seeded squad, eliminating each of the top three teams from the Western Division.
Maryville ends the 2017 campaign with a 22-19 record.
Ferrum College put a runner on with a two-out double in the top of the first from Amber Coffin. Coffin tried to extend the play to a double, as MC threw her out 9-6-5 to end the inning with a 0-0 tie.
Maryville put runners on the corners with only one out during the bottom of the inning, but a pair of pop outs ends the Scots' threat.
The Panthers put a runner on with one out as Courtney Rudd singled. Rachel Taylor would make a diving, line-drive snag, which she turned into an unassisted double play to end Ferrum's threat going to the bottom of the third.
Essence Strambler led off the bottom of the third with a single to center field. Ashton Hayden recorded a bunt single, but an errant throw to second allowed Strambler to come all the way around to score. Hayden followed suit, avoiding the tag. She was called safe, before being called out on a controversial call for not touching the plate. Going to the fourth, the Scots led 1-0.
Back-to-back-to-back errors aided the Panthers in the top of the fifth. After a Lois Carpenter single to lead off the inning, an error on a sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third with no outs. A second error would score Carpenter, leaving runners in the same position with no outs on the board and a tie ball game. A third error on a fielder's choice would plate pinch runner Mariel's Pierce, leaving two runners in scoring position with one out. Cheyenne Lemus used an RBI single through the left side to score Bailey Oakes, giving Ferrum a 3-1 advantage.
The Scots would have one rally left, though. An error, a single and a fielder's choice without an out loaded the bags for the Scots with no outs. A fielder's choice to the plate would stop the Scots, before Taylor was hit-by-pitch to score Strambler from third. A strikeout and a fly out would end MC's rally, though, as Ferrum would advance to the USA South Championship game.
Maryville was led by Strambler's 2-for-3 day, as she scored both of the Scots' runs. Hayden, Jenna Roberts, Taylor, Alexus Murray, Christina White and Christen Torres each had one hit, as Taylor added an RBI on the day.
For Ferrum, it was Amber Coffin who went 2-for-3. Strickland recorded the only RBI for the Panthers on the day, as all three runs ranked unearned.
