Campbell, Murray record two-RBI hits to lift MC, 4-3, over Emory & Henry

Maryville College used a pair of two-RBI hits from Taylor Campbell and Alexus Murray on Tuesday afternoon to earn their second victory of the 2019 campaign.

Campbell laced a two-RBI double in the first to give the Scots an early lead, before Murray's two-RBI single in the bottom of the fifth secured the win for Maryville.

MC's Katlyn Smith struck out seven inside the circle, securing her first win of the 2019 campaign. The reigning USA South Rookie Pitcher of the Year tossed 136 pitches in her complete-game seven innings, 82 of those going as strikes.

Smith struck out seven while allowing just three earned runs.

Maryville hung a pair of runs on the Wasps in the first inning, as Campbell collected a pair of RBI with a double. Morgan Brewer led off the inning with a single up the middle, as White walked. Campbell's double just inside the left-field line plated both runners for a 2-0 lead after one inning.

Maryville loaded the bases in the bottom of the second without giving up an out. MC was aided by a Wasp error, but Tiffany Cole came back to strike out the next two Scots. A groundout ended the threat, the score remaining at 2-0 through two innings.

Emory & Henry cut into MC's lead in the top of the fourth. Courtney Herron singled, before a Kendall Varner walk put two on. Pinch hitter Alex Thomas laced an RBI single to right center, as Herron scored from second. Going to the fifth, the score stood at 2-1.

Emory & Henry threatened again in the top of the fifth. The Wasps got a pair of runners in scoring position with only one out. Smith sat the next batter down via strikeout, before Christen Torres' scoop-and-throw at short ended the inning.

Maryville's bats came alive in the bottom of the fifth, as the Scots loaded the bases on a pair of singles and an error. Murray's double to the gap in right center scored both Christina White and Essence Strambler. The two-RBI shot gave Maryville a 4-1 lead going to the sixth inning.

Emory & Henry rallied in the seventh, as a walk and a single put runners on. Erin Anderson put both Caitlyn Yates and Amanda Whitlow in scoring position with a groundout before Rachel Smoot's two-RBI single to right-center cut the Scots' lead to one, 4-3. Smith forced a groundout to end the threat and preserve the one-run victory.

Maryville (2-1) was led by Campbell and Murray who both went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI. White went 1-for-3 with two runs scored, as Brewer went 1-for-3 with a run. Strambler added a run, as Torres and Reid Ballard each added hits.

Emory & Henry (3-3) saw Whitlow go 2-for-3 with a run, while Rachel Smoot was 1-for-2 with a pair of RBI.

Tiffany Cole took the loss, allowing three earned runs in four innints. Cameron Derr finished the final two innings for the Wasps, striking out all six batters she faced.
