Torres broke a 1-1 tie in the bottom of the fifth with her first home run of the season – a solo shot to left-center – just moments after the Cougars had rallied to tie things. The blast marks her fourth home run of her Orange and Garnet career.
In the circle, Smith shined to earn her second win of the season and move to 2-1. The sophomore hurler went the complete game with 10 strikeouts. She gave up just two walks and one earned run, as Averett found seven hits on the day.

Averett (6-2) appeared as if they would strike early in the top of the first, as a leadoff walk and an Erin Rankin double put a pair of runners in scoring position with no outs. Smith promptly sat the next three Cougars down via strikeout to end the early threat.
Maryville plated the first run of the game in the bottom of the inning, however, as Essence Strambler laced a double off the field in left-center. Taylor Campbell promptly plated the left fielder with an RBI single through the right side for a 1-0 lead.
The Cougars tied it up in the top of the fifth. Back-to-back singles by Casey Cook and Kaitlyn Aherron put runners on, before Rankins' RBI single up the middle plated Cook from second. Going to the bottom of the fifth, the score was tied 1-all.
Maryville's Torres ended the tie with one swing just three pitches into the bottom of the fifth. Torres' solo shot – her first homer of the season – gave the Scots a one-run lead again. It was the first hit for MC since the bottom of the first, as an error allowed another run to cross. Ashton Hayden found first on a fielding error, stealing second two pitches later. Christina White found the RBI with a single through the left for a 3-1 Maryville lead.
Smith pitched her way through the sixth and seventh, allowing just one hit in that span to secure the win.
Maryville was led by Torres who went 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI. Campbell was 2-for-3 with an RBI, while White was 1-for-3 with an RBI. Strambler went 1-for-3 with a run scored, as Hayden also tallied a run. Alexus Murray went 1-for-3 to complete the Scots' seven-hit afternoon.
For Averett, it was Rankin that was 2-for-4 with an RBI, while Aherron was 2-for-3. Cook went 1-for-3 with the Cougars' only run on seven hits.
