The Piedmont College Lions snapped Maryville College's 14-game win streak with a strong second half surge to defeat the USA South western division regular season champion Scots by the score of 55-49 in Demorest, Georgia on Saturday evening.
Maryville went to the half with a 27-22 advantage after depositing 52% (11-for-21) of their shots from the floor while their hosts only hit 21% (6-for-29).
MC could not find their perimeter attack in the second half (2-for-10) while also only connecting on 25% (5-for-20) of all their shots. The Lions began their comeback by out-pacing the Scots 18-9 in the third quarter and closing the contest with a 15-13 advantage. In the final half Piedmont shot 44% (10-for-23) from the floor and found their long-distance touch with a 4-for-8 effort from beyond the arc.
Piedmont (18-7, 11-3 USA South) finished the regular season second in the USA South western division standings. Brianna Barrett deposited a team-high 15 points while Jatasia Bailey and Dakota Sullens dropped nine and eight points respectively. Sullens paced Piedmont with seven rebounds.
Despite the loss, Maryville (21-4, 13-1 USA South) claims their fifth consecutive USA South regular season divisional crown. Rachel Hawn was dominant in the post with 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting while also pulling down eight rebounds. Allyson Freiermuth added another double-double to her career highlights with 13 points while hauling down a game-high 12 rebounds.
Maryville will await the closing of the USA South schedule on Sunday to see when and where the post-season league tournament will begin. Seedings will be released once received from the USA South administration.
