Scots' late rally falls short against Otterbein

The Maryville College women's basketball team fell to Otterbein College in the consolation game of the Pat Deacon Classic in Lexington, Kentucky by the score of 63-60.

In the first half, Maryville's Madison Maples dropped a trio of three-pointers for 11 points helping the Scots tally 29 first half points. Otterbein's Kiersten Taylor answered with 15 points on 7-of-9 shooting from the floor. At the intermission, Otterbein led the Scots 32-29.

Otterbein outpaced MC 16-12 in the third quarter, but the Scots would look to close out the game strong.

With 5:41 remaining in the game, MC's Rachel Hawn hit a running jumper making the score 52-49. Libby Gardner's four free throws kept MC close before an Amber Hudgens left-side layup and a Lauren Biliter basket pulled MC to within a basket (60-58) with 1:09 remaining. Maryville's Madison Maples was fouled and sank a pair of free throws to make the score 61-60, but Otterbein closed with a key steal to thwart any last second heroics.

Otterbein (3-2) was paced by Kiersten Taylor's 23 points on 11-of-16 shooting. Ali Cartnal added 16 points while sinking 8-of-9 free throws. Taylor completed the double-double effort with a team-high 11 rebounds.

Maryville (0-4) was led by Madison Maples' 18 points on 3-of-8 shooting from beyond the arc. Lauren Biliter was 6-for-12 from the field for 17 points. Rachel Hawn pulled down a game-high 12 rebounds while sinking nine points.

The Scots will prepare to take on Brevard College in North Carolina on Wednesday evening. Tip-off is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
