The Maryville College women's basketball team extended their present winning streak to three after defeating Averett University 88-79 in a non-conference matchup on Sunday afternoon in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
In the first quarter, the Cougars out-rebounded the Scots 12-2 while hitting 62% of their shots (13-of-21) from the floor. MC countered with an 11-for-16 (69%) effort from the floor. Following the first period, Maryville trailed 28-24.
Maryville's Madison Maples poured in 10 points while Rachel Hawn tallied seven points while grabbing four boards in the second quarter to help the Scots to a 51-46 halftime advantage. The Scots defense held Averett to a 21% shooting effort (4-of-19) to close the half.
Averett's Samm Chandler came to life in the third quarter hitting 4-of-7 shots for 11 points. MC kept pace with Haley Talbott's six points with six additional Scots posting buckets.
Maryville closed the final quarter holding Averett to a 28% shooting effort (6-of-21) and countered with a 44% shooting effort that included six points from Maples, four from Hawn, and four from Kelley Wandell.
The Cougars finished the game outrebounding MC 46-37, but the Scots finished 33-of-66 (50%) from the floor including an 8-for-20 (40%) effort from beyond the arc.
Averett (3-5) was led by Samm Chandler's game-high 32 points. Chandler was 10-of-17 from the floor while also hauling down nine rebounds. Brooke Carthon added 13 points off the bench on 6-of-11 shooting. Amani Ajayi tossed in 12 points while grabbing nine boards.
Maryville (4-6) was paced by Madison Maples' 20 points. The senior guard went 7-for-21 from the floor. Rachel Hawn added 17 points, nine rebounds, eight assists, three steals, and a blocked shot to a complete game effort in the paint for the Scots. Hawn shot an amazing 80% (8-for-10) from the field. Haley Talbott contributed 17 points while Libby Gardner tossed in eight points while dishing out four assists. Lauren Biliter and Elsa Eckenrod each tallied seven points on a combined 6-of-7 shooting.
The Scots will take some time off for the holidays. They will take the court next on Friday, December 29th in Atlanta, Georgia against Emory University. They will return home on Saturday, December 30th to host Agnes Scott College for a key USA South Athletic Conference challenge.
