Trio of Scots score double figures as MC falls to Dominican; Wandell named All-Tournament

Maryville College's Klaire Varney, Elsa Eckenrod and Kelley Wandell score in double figures on Sunday, but the Scots closed out the Julie Costello Memorial with a 65-57 loss to Dominican University (Ill.).

MC's Wandell was named to the All-Tournament squad for her performances this weekend.

Varney had 15 points for Maryville, while Eckenrod and Wandell had 13 and 11 each, but a key second quarter rally would prove costly.

After trailing by just one, 17-16, at the end of the first quarter, the Stars would rally for a 13-0 run. Maryville's Eckenrod bucketed a 3-pointer at the 4:21 mark to stop the rally which send Maryville on an 8-0 run of their own.

Dominican would outscore Maryville, 18-12, in the second stanza before taking the eight-point victory, 65-57.

MC won the third quarter, 14-11, but the Stars would use a 19-point fourth quarter to hold on.

Maryville College (0-4) was led by Varney's 15 points. She added six rebounds, five steals, four assists and a block on the afternoon. Eckenrod had a near double-double with 13 points, nine rebounds, three assists and a pair of steals, while Wandell had 11 points, seven boards and a steal.

Shelby Hix had nine points off the bench, as she had three rebounds, three steals and an assist. Libby Gardner had three points and two assists, as Brooke McCurdy matched her with a pair of rebounds. Charity Crabtree had three points, two blocks and one rebound on the day.

Maryville shot 20-of-64 (31.3 percent) from the field, as they tallied six treys at a 26.1 percent clip. The added 13 assists on the day, as they forced 28 Dominican turnovers. MC tallied 27 points off those miscues.

The Stars outrebounded the Scots, 41-29, as they shot 42.6 percent (23-of-54) from the field. They had four 3-pointers at a 25 percent rate.

Dominican (3-2) saw Alexis Hoskins go for a double-double 20 points and 13 rebounds. She had three steals, two blocks and an assist, while Timiya Ray also added a double-double. Ray had 15 points and 12 rebounds, while Alisha Markey had 10 points and a trio of assists.

Maryville will return to action next weekend, as the Scots open USA South Athletic Conference play. MC hosts Huntingdon College on Friday night, Nov. 30, at 6 p.m. They will also take on LaGrange College inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium on Saturday, Dec. 1 at 3 p.m.
