The Maryville College women's basketball squad completed their regular season sweep of Brevard College after defeating the Tornados 64-45 on Saturday evening in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
The Scots used a shut-down defensive in the second and fourth quarters to pull away for the key USA South victory.
MC shot 50% in the first quarter (6-for-12) that included a strong 5-for-8 effort from beyond the arc. Klaire Varney dropped seven points while Brooke McCurdy tallied a pair of treys off the bench. The Scots' defense clamped down and held Brevard to a 5-for-17 (29%) success rate. Maryville took a 21-16 advantage into the second quarter.
Maryville outpaced Brevard 16-9 in the second quarter taking a 37-25 lead into the intermission. MC's defense allowed only a 4-of-14 effort for the visitors while Libby Gardner tallied six points while helping the Scots shoot 35%.
Brevard's best quarter was the third when they went 6-for-15 (40%) from the floor. Maryville kept pace with a perfect effort from the charity stripe with Kelley Wandell and Varney collectively going 6-for-6 on free throws.
The Scots closed the game strong in the fourth quarter allowing Brevard just five points on 2-of-12 shooting. MC closed with five points each by Elsa Eckenrod and Catherine Upshaw while going 5-for-16 from the floor as a team.
Maryville found their long-range shots during the challenge hitting 9-of-22 three-pointers (41%) for the game while going 15-for-20 (75%) at the charity stripe.
Brevard (7-8, 3-6 USA South) falls to seventh place in the present USA South standings. Ty'She Washington finished with 11 points while grabbing five rebounds. Avery Lockwood added 10 points and five boards while Krysta Davis paced the Tornados off the bench with a team-high eight rebounds.
Maryville (7-9, 5-2 USA South) is presently in third place in the league's regular season standings. Klaire Varney dropped 16 points while recording nine rebounds, seven assists, and three steals. Kelley Wandell was 5-for-7 from the floor for a dozen points while also bringing down a game-high nine boards. Libby Gardner tossed in 12 points in 34 minutes at the point guard position. Elsa Eckenrod added 10 points while Catherine Upshaw tossed in eight points off the bench.
The Scots will host USA South Western Division rival Berea College on Sunday. Tip-off is slated for 2:00 p.m. in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
