Elsa Eckenrod and Libby Gardner set to take on Spain in June

A pair of Maryville College women's basketball players will be gaining international experience in Spain this summer as part of the Beyond Sports Tours program.

Rising junior Elsa Eckenrod and rising senior Libby Gardner will each tour Barcelona, Madrid, and Valencia from June 3-13.

Eckenrod, an education major from McMinnville, Tennessee, is excited about the local camps the tour will facilitate. "Anytime I can work with kids and share my passion for the sport of basketball is a positive," Elsa stated. "To do this while experiencing another culture has me extremely excited about the opportunity."

In only a pair of seasons in the orange and garnet, this talented shooting guard has played 53 games shooting over 35% from the floor. Her 314 career points averages 5.9 per game while bringing down 220 career boards averaging 4.2 career rebounds per game.

This dynamic duo is eager to learn more insight from other coaches and players while preparing for next season with the Scots.

Libby is a business management major with aspirations of managing her own business. She is excited that this trip will expose her to new cultures while broadening her global mindset to assist her personal growth in the business field. On the court, Libby is excited to test her basketball skills against players from all over the world.

"This trip is going to be great, not only for Libby and Elsa, but for our entire program," stated Maryville College Head Coach Darrin Travillian.  "I think it offers Libby and Elsa the opportunity to hear a different voice, to play in a different system, and to play with a talented group of teammates.  They will also grow by playing against international competition because they will see different styles of play and see how far-reaching our game really is.  Who knows?  Someone in Spain might have a great prospect for our program!"
