The Maryville College women's golf program, under the direction of second-year head coach Mandy Hammonds, began the 2017-18 season in Birmingham, Alabama competing in the Birmingham-Southern Southern Showdown at Highland Park Golf Course. The event was scheduled for two days, but the impending poor weather forced the participants to play 36 holes on Sunday.
The Scots finished eighth of the nine participating institutions. MC posted a 393-380 (773) for a +213 on the day.
Milligan College claimed the team title with a 310-309 (619) for a plus-59 group performance. Milligan's Sarah Son earned the individual crown with a 72-77 (149) for a plus-9 on the day. Son won by three strokes as Birmingham Southern's Alexis Chambers posted a 75-77 (152) to finish 12-over par.
Maryville's top finisher was freshman Katelyn Witucki. The Seymour, Tennessee native finished 21st with an 82-82 (164). Junior Grace Gass added a 37th place finish with a 97-89 (186). Sophomore Elaina Davis went 98-98 (196) for a 40th place finish. Freshman Katelyn Curtis concluded the Scots' scoring with a 116-111 (227) 44th place finish.
Coach Hammonds' squad will begin preparation for the Generals' Invitational on October 2-3 at Lexington Golf and Country Club in Lexington, Virginia.
