Sipos sets record with second USA South Rookie mention

Maryville College's Bailey Sipos earned USA South Rookie of the Week honors this week, after recording a trio of goals in four matches for the Scots last weekend.

The Hardin Valley Academy native becomes the first freshman to earn multiple conference rookie honors for women's soccer since Maryville joined the league in 2012.

Sierra Siegel – the 2012 USA South Rookie of the Year – along with Mandy Marshall and Kaitlyn Kennedy each won a single award during their first year. With a Sept. 22 nod, Sipos earns her second in just a three-week period.

"Bailey has not only been a great goal scorer for us, but she has been a fierce competitor," Head Coach Pepe Fernandez said. "Many goal scorers just look to be in the right place at the right time. Because she competes so hard on both sides of the ball, she is a constant threat to score."

Sipos had three goals in a 4-0 week for Maryville, as the Forward recorded a pair of game winners. She's helped the Scots to a nine-game winning streak, as MC has outscored opponents 39-3.

This week, in four matches, the Scots have outscored the competition by an incredible 20-1 – the only goal coming off a late penalty kick.

Sipos helped in that effort. In a 2-0 win over Covenant, the Knoxville, Tenn. native was held to just one shot, before she bounced back in a 10-0 win over conference foe Berea College. She added the game-winner on only one shot in the match.

In the 18th minute against the Mountaineers, she added her 12th goal of the 2017 season.

In a 3-1 win over Hunting College, Sipos was held to limited action. She didn't record a shot in the match, before coming back with a fury on Sunday.

The Scots downed Agnes Scott College in USA South play, 5-0, as the talented forward added a pair of goals, including the game-winner.

That goal came just before the 15th minute of action, as she collected a Lexie Hill pass after playing a tough through ball. Sipos scored the goal in the bottom left corner of the net, before adding her 14th goal of the season in the second half.

Miranda Lukas lofted a perfect cross from right to left in the 72nd minute. Sipos took a few touches, before a right-footer from 18 yards out found the middle of the net.

On the season, Sipos has scored 14 goals with a trio of assists. She is only one goal away from entering the Maryville College record book and tying as the 19th-most goals in a season by any Scot.

The freshman needs one goal to become only the sixth freshman to make the list, joining three-time All-South Region honoree Jennifer Windrow and four-time All-South honoree and 2012 USA South Player of the Year Ashley Howarth. Jaime Roberts, Dria Arenth and Laken Barnes are also freshmen listed in the goal records.

"It's really exciting to see her score with such consistency," Fernandez said. "Scoring consistently in soccer is a very difficult thing to do. To do it as a freshman is a credit to her work, mental toughness and to the players who are consistently getting her the ball. Jennifer Windrow was named by The Daily Times as the Athlete of the Century, so it puts her in some pretty impressive company."

Sipos has recorded 31 points with 38 shots on goal this season. She has a .644 shots-on-goal percentage, while adding four game-winning goals to her list of accomplishments.

Sipos will look to help the Scots carry their USA South Western Division-leading record into a huge matchup this weekend against Piedmont College. Maryville (4-0) and Piedmont (3-0) sit as the only two Western Division teams with unblemished conference records.

MC travels to Demorest, Ga. for the matchup, with first touch set for 2 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 14.
