Maryville College's Kayla Zimmerman earned USA South Rookie of the Week honors this week, as the freshman went a perfect 4-0.
Zimmerman helped the Scots to a sweep of Ohio Christian University, before her and Anastasia Dunn combined for the trio of wins against LaGrange College.
Zimmerman and Anastasia Dunn were the only Scots to go 4-0 this week, as both won each of their singles matches. The duo sided each other in combining for a pair of doubles victories in the first-seeded positions.
"Kayla and Anya complement each other's game very nicely," Co-Head Coach Millicent Dunn said. "They are both good baseline players, but what really makes them so great is their willingness to move into the net and put away balls. Their chemistry on court is impressive to watch, considering they haven't known each other that long. They make a great team."
Zimmerman swept the competition against Ohio Christian University on Saturday at the Tyson Tennis Center in Knoxville, Tenn.
The Halls High School product coupled with Anastasia Dunn to sweep Drayah Johnston and Kaylee Dickson 8-1 in doubles action. Zimmerman then went on to defeat Jerika Smith in two-straight games, 7-5, 6-2.
"Kayla has been working hard every day at practice, and it showed this past week in her match play," Millicent Dunn said. "She competes hard every point, and she is willing to do whatever it takes to become a better tennis player."
She continued her dominance against USA South foes LaGrange College inside the Cedar Bluff Racquet Club on Sunday morning.
The Knoxville, Tenn. native picked up two of MC's three wins against the Panthers, as Anastasia Dunn combined with her for one and took another.
The Zimmerman-Dunn duo defeated Jenna Eppes and Liz Minick in a hard-fought 9-7 match, before Zimmerman went on to defeat Minick in singles action. She took the match in two sets, 6-3, 6-4.
The reigning USA South Rookie of the Week has earned six wins on the season – three doubles and three singles matches.
Zimmerman will lead Maryville into a non-conference match on Tuesday, as the Scots travel to Brevard, N.C. MC takes on the Tornados with a 2:30 p.m. first serve.
