MC advances to semifinals behind Flickinger, Vineyard

Maryville College advances to the USA South Semifinal match behind a sweep of the Salem College Spirits in Boydson Baird Gymnasium, 3-0.

The Scots advanced after a rally during the second set to earn the victory, 25-14, 25-20, 25-21.

Maryville will advance to play USA South Western Division Averett who went an undefeated 15-0 on the regular season. The remainder of the conference tournament is set to take place in Danville, Va.

The No. 6-seeded Salem Spirits advanced to the quarterfinals against the No. 2-seeded Scots on Tuesday, after the Spirits defeated the No. 3 Piedmont Lions, 3-0.

Maryville was led by Kaitlyn Flickinger, as the junior libero tallied 18 digs on the afternoon. She had three service aces to go with an assist and a kill in the sweep.

Julia Vineyard had 10 kills, while Brianne Sidner had nine kills, five digs and one service ace.

Abrianna Jones had seven kills, while Nia Haller tallied six. Dejane Hester-Taylor and Saidee McDanie each had five kills.

McDaniel had a match-high 36 assists, as she had two service aces and four digs.

Allison Botts followed Flickinger's 18 digs with 12 of her own, while Haller had seven.

Maryville hit .192 for the match, as they had six blocks.

Taylor Moulton led the Spirits (13-18) with eight kills, while Madelyn Chappell and Kylie Taffer each had six. Hannah Delcamp had 18 assists, while Mariah Sharon led the defense with 15 digs.

Delcamp finished with a double-double behind 11 digs, while Moulton had 12.

Elsewhere in USA South Western Division, No. 4 LaGrange upset top-seeded Covenant, 3-1. Maryville and LaGrange will advance into the semifinals from the Western Division.

In Eastern Division play, both top-seeded squads advanced. No. 1 Averett beat No. 5 Ferrum, 3-1, while the No. 2 Meredith knocked off third-seeded William Peace, 3-1.
