The Maryville College volleyball squad earned the right to host the USA South first round next week by closing out their regular season slate with a sweep over Huntingdon College and Piedmont College in Montgomery, Alabama on Saturday afternoon.
In the first match, Maryville's Brianne Sidner threw down a match-high 11-kills to help the Scots defeat the Hawks 3-0 by the scores of 25-19, 25-19, and 25-19. The duo of Taylor Youell and Saidee McDaniel directed the offense with 17 and 14 assists respectively. Sidner's attacks were bolstered by Nia Haller (8 kills) and Rhianna Tyldesley (7 kills). Dejane Hester-Taylor and Lauren Espinal were strong at the net defensively with a combined eight blocks while Kaitlyn Flickinger and Nia Haller paced the floor defense with a combined 29 digs.
Huntingdon closes out their regular season 18-16 overall and 5-6 in USA South action.
The weekend finale was a hard-fought 3-2 victory over Piedmont College by the scores of 26-24, 23-25, 25-17, 25-27, and 15-12. MC's Sidner and Tyldesley took over at the net with 14 and 13 kills each. Haller added eight kills while Kelley Wandell, Espinal, and Hester-Taylor each posted six kills. Youell directed the efficient offensive attack with 28 assists while McDaniel chipped in 19 assists. Youell and McDaniel completed double-double efforts by also adding 11 digs each to a strong defensive team effort. Fickinger led the floor returns with a team-high 32 digs. Yasmeen Chan was also strong with 23 digs. Haller tossed in 19 digs and four blocks to help preserve the key league victory.
The win advances Maryville to 16-12 overall and 9-3 in USA South play. Piedmont falls to 14-10 and 7-4 in league challenges.
The Scots have earned the No.2 seed in the western division in the upcoming USA South tournament. Maryville will host a pair of matches on Tuesday in the Cooper Athletic Center.
