Scots rally from 2-0 deficit to defeat Emory & Henry, 3-2

The Maryville College Volleyball Scots moved their win streak to four-straight on Sunday night, as MC rallied from a 2-0 deficit to defeat Emory & Henry College, 3-2.

The Wasps took an early lead, 2-0, as they defeated the Scots, 25-18, 25-20. It would take extra play in the third, as Maryville was able to take a 27-25 win. The rallied the Scots for 25-17 and 15-11 victories in the final two sets to earn the sweep on the weekend.

Sunday's win over Emory & Henry College gave Maryville a 4-0 record in the past two days, as they move above .500 with a 6-5 mark.

Arin Wyttenbach was stellar in the match, as she posted 11 kills and two blocks. She hit .474 in the match, while junior Brianne Sidner continued her streak of 10-plus kill efforts to three.

Sidner had 12 kills, eight digs, three assists, three service aces and a pair of blocks in the victory.

Maryville took an 11-10 lead in the opening set on a Sidner kill, before the Wasps would rally. Emory & Henry took 10 of the next 12 points for a 20-13 lead. A trio of kills by Wyttenbach and a service ace from MacKenzie Marcrum cut it to 23-18, but the Wasps would win the opening point.

Emory & Henry jumped to an early advantage in the second set. MC fought off a trio of set points, as Wyttenbach and Hannah Potts tallied kills, but a Rebecca Morehouse kill from Sam McCauley ended MC's rally, 25-20.

The two squad battled to a 20-20 score in the third set, as Maryville would use a pair of Sidner kills and a Morehouse error to take a 23-20 lead. Emory scored the next four points to earn match points, 24-23, on a pair of Makayla Payne kills, before a service error knotted things at 24.

A Delaini Nagy kill gave the Wasps their second-straight match point, as Dejane Hester-Taylor would throw down a hard kill to tie things at 25. Kate Finn posted a kill from Sidner, before a bad set from Abbie Jennings gave Maryville a key 27-25 victory to extend the match.

MC jumped to a 7-1 lead in the fourth set on a pair of aces and a kill from Finn. The Scots held a five-point lead for much of the fourth set, as a Hester-Taylor kill and a Emory & Henry error tied the match at 2-2 with a 25-17 score in favor of the Scots.

Maryville would hold the Wasps to a .000 hitting percentage in the final set to earn the win, although Emory & Henry would jump to a 3-0 lead. They would extend that to 5-1, before MC would score seven of the next eight on a kill and an ace from Saidee McDaniel. Hester-Taylor found four kills down the stretch, while Sidner and Marcrum added aces for a 15-11 victory.

Maryville (6-5) was led by Wyttenbach and Sidner. Hester-Taylor had nine kills, four digs and two blocks, while Meredith Bonee added seven kills, 17 assists and 12 digs. Finn had five kills, four digs and a trio of service aces in the match, as Madison Wilkerson had seven kills.

McDaniel had a team-leading 19 assists to go with five digs, three kills and a pair of service aces, as Taylor Youell added seven assists. Marcrum posted 17 digs, four assists and a pair of aces for the Scots.

Emory & Henry (3-9) saw a trio of Wasps finish in double-digit kills. Tori Holmberg had 17 kills, as Nagy and Morehouse had 14 and 13 each. Sam McCauley had 39 assists, while Lauren Coolidge had 12 digs.

The Scots will have a day off, before they return to USA South play on Tuesday night. MC hosts Berea College in conference action at 6 p.m. inside Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
