The Maryville College Women's Cross Country team was tabbed sixth among the 17 USA South Athletic Conference schools on Thursday during the conference's annual coaches poll.
The squad graduated a total of three seniors last season, as they come into the 2018 campaign with Anne Marie McDurmon leading the way as the lone senior.
Maryville will enter 2018 after finishing fifth within the USA South Championship last season. The Scots will on Friday, Aug. 31, as they travel to Lookout Mountain, Ga. for the Covenant College Invitational.
Berea College, under the direction of Head Coach Shawn Jakubowski, was picked in the USA South Athletic Conference preseason coaches poll to capture the women's cross country title in 2018. In their first season as League members, the Mountaineers claimed the USA South championship at last year's conference meet. Berea received 12 of a possible 17 first-place votes to go along with 252 points. Head coaches do not vote for their own teams in the balloting.
The USA South welcomed Brevard College and Pfeiffer University last season as institutions reclassifying from NCAA Division II status. This year each of their teams are included in the preseason poll and eligible to win the USA South championship at the Conference Meet. Both Brevard and Pfeiffer still will not be eligible to qualify for NCAA postseason competition until full NCAA Division III membership is established.
Covenant College finished second in the balloting with 239 points and the final five remaining first place votes. Piedmont College placed third with 223 points, Methodist University was fourth with 197 points and Meredith College rounded out the top-five of the poll with 179 points.
The women's cross country season gets underway on Friday, Aug. 31, as 10 teams are in action. The USA South Cross Country Championship will be held at and hosted by Maryville College in Maryville, Tennessee on Friday, October 26. The men's 8,000-meter race is scheduled to begin at Noon while the women's 6,000-meter race is scheduled to begin at 11:00am.
