Maryville sets pace in overall, women's USA South Presidents Cup standings after successful fall seasons

Following the conclusion of the 2019-2020 fall season of USA South competition, the current standings for the Overall, Men's and Women's Presidents Cups have been released. This year will mark the 15th year the USA South will present an Overall, a Men's and a Women's Presidents Cup. Currently, Maryville College has the lead in both the overall and women's cup standings while N.C. Wesleyan College sits atop the men's cup standings.

The USA South Athletic Conference Presidents Cup symbolizes the league's top men's and women's athletic program each year. The Presidents Cup is awarded by a points system where the first place team in each sport will be awarded the number of points that corresponds to the number of schools that sponsor teams in that sport. The second place team receives one point less than the first place team and so on, down to one point for the last place team that competes. Additionally, for all sports with the exception of football which has no post-season play, bonus points will be up for grabs. The team winning the USA South Tournament Championship will receive two bonus points for that sport while the runner-up will receive one bonus point. In the sports of golf and cross country, the athlete placing first will earn two bonus points for his/her institution while the runner-up will earn one bonus point. If athletes from the same institution place first and second, that institution will earn the two bonus points for the first place finish only. Finally, for those sports with divisional standings, the Presidents Cup points are separated by divisions.

"I am proud of our student-athletes, coaches, and support staff who each work diligently to provide an atmosphere where our students progressively grow and learn on and off the playing venues," stated Maryville College Director of Athletics Kandis Schram. "The sports programs, staff, and facilities reflect the excellence of our institution, contribute to the quality of campus life, and promote a shared experience with the community and alumni."

Maryville finished the fall season with 31 USA South All-Conference honorees, eight USA South All-Tournament selections (including a pair of tournament MVP's), three CoSida 1st Team Academic All-District award winners, a pair of USA South Performers of the Year (Shannon Reagan, Lilly Simms), two NCAA tournament bids (women's soccer and volleyball), and two USA South Coaches of the Year (Kandis Schram, Pepe Fernandez). MC's women (volleyball and soccer) went undefeated in league regular season action while going 22-0 collectively in USA South regular season action.

The awarding of an Overall Presidents Cup began at the conclusion of the 1978-79 season. Following the 2004-05 season, the Conference presented separate Men's and Women's Presidents Cups in lieu of an Overall Cup. The following year the Conference reinstated the Overall Cup along with the Men's and Women's Cups.
