The Maryville College baseball team completed a sweep of a three-game series over Brevard College with a 9-4 victory over the Tornados on Sunday.
The Scots combined for a 14-hit attack offensively while senior right-hander Ricky Ward tossed five strong innings on the hill for the victory.
Trailing 1-0, Maryville tallied a trio of runs in the third inning. An RBI double by Andrew Henry tied the game before Johnny Carpenter blasted a double to center field scoring Henry and Christian Poulsen.
MC added runs in the fourth and fifth with a Poulsen RBI single and a Carpenter sacrifice fly scoring Henry.
Brevard rallied for a pair of runs in the eighth before the Scots put up four runs in the top of the ninth inning. Mike Homan, Evan Ezell, Patrick Messinger, and Christian Poulsen each delivered key RBI.
Ricky Ward earned the victory after allowing only three hits and one earned run over the first five innings. Jacob Gossett tossed 3.1 innings of strong relief striking out three while allowing a pair of hits and one earned run. Bleu Butcher closed the door on the sweep by recording the final pair of outs.
Offensively, Maryville was paced by Christian Poulsen and Johnny Carpenter who each had three hits. The duo combined for five RBI. Andrew Henry, Alden Wright, and Mike Homan each added a pair of hits to the Scots' offensive attack.
Maryville (13-2) will host SUNY-Oneonta on Scotland Yard Monday evening.
