Maryville baseball earns No.18 national ranking by ABCA/Collegiate Baseball

The Maryville College baseball team has been ranked No.18 nationally by the American Baseball Coaches Association and Collegiate Baseball Newspaper in their initial in-season poll this spring. In the March 13th poll, USA South member Methodist University is ranked 10th. Maryville will challenge the Monarchs in Fayetteville, North Carolina on April 21-22.

The No. 18 nod is the highest national ranking for the Scots' baseball program in school history.

The 17-3 Scots diamondmen are just shy of the top 25 poll sitting at 29th nationally. USA South foes also in the poll include Methodist University at No.8 (17-2) while LaGrange College (11-10) and Piedmont College (11-6) are each receiving votes.

Maryville's pitching staff has a stellar team ERA of 2.88. Opponents are hitting just .218 off the Scots' hurlers. Christian Poulsen is 4-0 in 27 innings pitched with a 0.99 ERA. Michael Hawks, Ricky Ward, and Evan Heffner are each 2-0 as starters for MC. The bullpen has been lights out with Trevor Townsend, Zach McGee, Zach Messinger, Jacob Gossett, Joe Logsdon, Jerod Dickey, and Samuel Joiner each posting sub-3.00 ERA's for the year.

Offensively Maryville is hitting .298 as a team. Shortstop Patrick Messinger is leading the squad with a .344 batting average. Outfielder Johnny Carpenter paces the Scots in hits, doubles (7), home runs (3), and RBI (22).  Seven Scots starters are hitting over .300 on the season.

Head Coach Cody Church had this to say about the ranking. "It's exciting to get any sort of recognition for what a team has done. Ultimately, no team in the country puts too much stock into any ranking in the middle of March. We hope we can just continue to play good baseball and see where we are at the end of the spring."

The Scots will travel to LaGrange College for a key three-game league series this weekend. They will return home next week on Scotland Yard to host Sewanee for a doubleheader on Wednesday beginning at 4:00 p.m. and then host USA South rival Covenant College on Friday and Saturday.
