Scots hold off Wasps' late-inning rally for 8-7 victory

The Maryville College diamond men thwarted off a late rally by Emory & Henry to defeat the Wasps 8-7 in a non-conference challenge in Emory, Virginia on Monday afternoon.

The Scots lit up the scoreboard in the first inning when Johnny Carpenter drove Hayden Hollingsworth home with a sacrifice fly. Following an Alden Wright two-out double, Drew Johnson sliced an RBI single to right center field giving MC an early 2-0 lead.

Back-to-back doubles to left center field by Hollingsworth and Jake Petersen pushed MC's lead to 3-0 in the third. Petersen advanced to third on a wild pitch and dashed home on an Alden Wright two-out RBI single through the left side. After three innings, the Scots held a 4-0 advantage.

The Wasps tallied a run in the fifth when Russ French pushed an infield bunt toward the right side and advanced into scoring position on a Maryville miscue. Daulton Horne singled to right center field to send French home to make the score 4-1. A two-out, bases loaded walk to Holden Watkins by MC's Kevin Black made the score 4-2 before Black gave way to reliever Zach McGee. McGee closed the fifth with a key bases-loaded strikeout to preserve the Scots two-run lead. McGee would eventually earn his second win of the season after his pressure-packed performance.

Black finished his mound start for the Scots with 4.2 innings of work, striking out six, while scattering only five hits.

Maryville tallied four runs in the sixth to take an 8-2 lead. Alden Wright led off the sixth inning for the Scots with a solo blast over the left centerfield wall. Wright's second dinger of the season made the score 5-2. MC tallied an additional run when Drew Johnson doubled, advanced to third on an Andrew Henry single, and scored on a Mike Homan RBI groundout. Patrick Messinger recorded his 13th RBI of the season with a single up the middle scoring Henry. Jake Petersen singled through the left side to send Messinger home to complete the Scots' scoring in the sixth.

Emory & Henry rallied in the seventh when an error and a bunt put runners on first and second against MC reliever Bleu Butcher. Pinch-hitter Eli Straw promptly laced a single to left field to score Gavin Felty. Holden Watkins lifted a sacrifice fly to center field to score Daulton Horne. The Wasps completed their scoring when Straw crossed the plate on a Butcher balk. After seven complete innings, Maryville led 8-5.

The Wasps closed the gap in the eighth inning with a pair of runs when Felty singled through the left side scoring Joe Tolone who reached on a Maryville infield error. An Eli Straw sacrifice fly plated Lukas Hart who was hit by a pitch earlier. Going into the final inning, Maryville held a slim 8-7 advantage.

Maryville's Trevor Townsend earned his second save of the season after inducing a groundout, picking off a potential game-tying runner on second base, and striking out the final batter of the game. Townsend went a pair of innings allowing only a pair of hits and no earned runs.

The Scots' (19-5) finished with an 11-hit attack paced by Alden Wright's 3-for-4 effort. Wright and Hayden Hollingsworth each scored a pair of runs. Jake Petersen, Drew Johnson, and Patrick Messinger each finished with a pair of hits.

Maryville will prepare for a non-conference doubleheader on Sunday when they welcome The University of the South to Scotland Yard at 4:00 p.m.
