Maryville College suffered a sweep by Huntingdon College on Saturday, as the Hawks took both games of the USA South double-header.
Huntingdon won the first game of the day, 11-7, before rallying late for a 6-3 win in the nightcap.
Tomorrow's scheduled third game of the USA South Athletic Conference series has been scratched due to impending weather.
GAME ONE: Huntingdon 11, Maryville 7
Maryville outhit Huntingdon in the first game of the day, 13-12, but a six-run second inning would prove costly in the game.
An early 2-0 lead dwindled for the Scots, as their late rally wasn't enough.
A Christian Poulsen single to center and a hit-by-pitch on Jake Petersen put runners on, as the Scots had two in scoring position following a wild pitch. Peyton Sawyer added an RBI single through the right side to plate Poulsen, as Mike Homan added an RBI on an error to score Petersen. After one inning, Maryville held a 2-0 lead.
A six-run second inning would put the Hawks in control, however, as Huntingdon tallied five hits. A single, an error and a bunt single loaded the bags with just one out, before a wild pitch advanced all runners with Andrew Knight scoring. Chris Fisher doubled to right for an RBI to plate Danny Coleman Jr., before Will Cosby's two-RBI single to left scored Fisher and Colton Clark. Cosby stole second, scoring on Wes Powell's RBI double to right-center. Following a walk, Garrett Breland added an RBI of his own with a groundout for a 6-2 lead.
Huntingdon added to their lead in the bottom of the third after Knight doubled to left-center. A wild pitch advanced him to third before Coleman's sacrifice fly to center made the score 7-2.
The Hawks extended it to 8-2 in the bottom of the fourth, as a walk and a passed ball put Cosby in scoring position. Powell singled through the right side to plate Cosby from second for a six-run lead through four.
Maryville cut into the Hawks lead in the top of the fifth with a four-run inning. A Petersen double down the left-field line and a Sawyer single to right put two runners on before Drew Johnson was hit-by-pitch to juice the bases. Petersen scored on a groundout, before Sawyer was plated with a passed ball. Back-to-back singles by Nelson Smith and Cody Gregory and a Huntingdon error put both runners in scoring position. Kolton Hicks' two-RBI single to left scored both runners for an 8-6 score through five innings.
The Hawks scored two runs in the bottom of the sixth and plated an insurance run in the bottom of the seventh.
MC's seventh run came on a Ryan Jones walk. Jones scored on a Hicks' RBI single to center for the 11-7 final.
Maryville was led by Hicks who went 4-for-5 with a trio of RBI. Sawyer was 3-for-5 with a run and an RBI, as Poulsen was 2-for-5 with a run. Petersent also added a pair of runs for the Scots on the day.
Huntingdon's Powell was 3-for-4 with four RBI and a run, while Knight was 3-for-4 with two runs. Cosby and Fisher were both 2-for-4 with two runs and two RBI in the opening game.
GAME TWO: Huntingdon 6, Maryville 3
Maryville jumped to a 3-0 lead in the second game before the Hawks tallied six-straight runs to secure the sweep on Saturday.
MC hung a pair of runs in the first inning, as a pair of walks put two runners on with two outs. Mike Homan used an RBI single through the left side to score Petersen, before Gregory's RBI single to right plated Drew Johnson. MC led 2-0 after one inning.
Homan again added an RBI in the bottom of the third following back-to-back singles by Petersen and Sawyer. Homan's sacrifice fly plated Petersen for a 3-0 MC advantage.
Huntingdon tied the game on three-straight plays in the bottom of the third after a Cosby single and a Powell double put two runners in scoring position. Breland's RBI single through the left side scored Cosby, as Bradley Harris' sacrifice plated Powell from third. Knight would add an RBI single of his own, scoring Breland from second for a 3-3 score.
Huntingdon found the game-winner in the fifth, before a two-run seventh gave the Hawks a 6-3 win.
Maryville (5-6, 0-4 USA South) was led by Petersen with a 1-for-3 day with two runs. Homan was 1-for-3 with two RBI, as Nelson Smith went 2-for-4.
Huntingdon (12-0, 5-0) saw Breland go 3-for-4 with two runs, while Powell, Coleman Jr. and Haskins each had two-hit days. Powell had two runs, as Knight added two RBI.
Maryville College will step out of USA South play, as they taken on Wittenberg in a double-header. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. on Wednesday, March 6.
