Scots claim series with 11-4 victory over Mt. St. Jospeh

While five Fighting Scots hurlers contained Mt. St. Joseph University to only three hits, Maryville College exploded for a 13-hit outburst to take the final game of a non-conference series by the score of 11-4 on Sunday afternoon on MC's Scotland Yard.

Each squad exchanged runs in the first inning before Maryville put up seven runs in the bottom of the second inning. An RBI double by Gabe Lopez gave MC a 2-1 advantage. Five consecutive RBI singles by Dew Johnson, Christian Poulsen, Cody Gregory, Ryan Jones, and Eric Hart put the Scots up 8-1 after two complete innings.

The Lions added a run in the third inning on a Tyrell Anderson fielder's choice RBI before MC's Poulsen laced a two-RBI single to left field scoring a pair of unearned runs.

Eric Hart's run-scoring single in the fourth inning gave the Scots an 11-2 advantage before the Lions tallied a pair of runs in the seventh on a bases-loaded walk and a fielding error.

Maryville's offense was paced by designated hitter Christian Poulsen who finished 3-for-4 and 4 RBI. Cody Gregory, Ryan Jones, Eric Hart, and Logan Hayes each had a pair of hits with Hart driving in three runs on the day.

Freshman right-hander DJ Cooper (3-0) earned the win on the mound. He allowed only a pair of hits over four innings of work. Tyler Stubbs, Nick McClendon, Rocky Mauriello, and Isaac Wiley closed down the final five innings allowing only one hit and one earned run.

The loss moves Mt. St. Joseph to 6-8 while Maryville advances to 14-11 overall.

The Scots will jump back into USA South action next Friday when they host LaGrange College on Friday evening with a 7:00 p.m. first pitch on MC's Scotland Yard.
