The Maryville College baseball team opened the 2019 USA South Tournament in LaGrange, Georgia on Thursday with their bats on fire, but an early lead was not enough as the Methodist University Monarchs sent the Scots to the loser's bracket with an 8-6 victory.
The Scots jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the first inning when Gabe Lopez doubled down the right field line, advanced to third on a sacrifice bunt by Logan Hayes and scored on a Christian Poulsen RBI single up the middle. Following a double by Peyton Sawyer, Poulsen crossed home plate on a sacrifice fly by Mike Homan. Eric Hart scored Sawyer on a single to right-center field before dashing home himself from first base on a Joey Tomlinson RBI double.
Maryville rode the 4-0 advantage into the sixth inning when the Monarchs (32-7) rallied for three runs with two outs. A trio of hits and a pair of wild pitches made the score 4-3 after six complete.
Maryville's Jordan Davis left the game on the mound after scattering six hits over six innings allowing only three earned runs.
Methodist put up four runs in the seventh off MC reliever Jacob Gossett. Four hits including key RBI knocks by Alex Kachler, Will May, and McKinley Strickland gave the Monarchs a 7-4 advantage.
Methodist tacked on an insurance run in the bottom of the eighth when Parker Clayton scored on a wild pitch.
The Scots will advance to action on Friday morning at 10:00 a.m. against Greensboro College. MC will challenge the Pride at Point University's West Point Field.
