Maryville College Director of Athletics Kandis Schram has announced that Clint Helton has been named the head baseball coach of the Fighting Scots.
"We did not have to go very far in our search to find the right person to lead our program," stated Coach Schram. "The committee was impressed with his energy, his strong relationship with the players, his vision for the future of the program, and his ability to get the right type of student-athlete to be successful both on and off the field at Maryville."
Helton, a 2011 Maryville College graduate, enters his sixth season with the Scots after serving as MC's Associate Head Baseball Coach while directing the pitching staff and serving as the Scots recruiting coordinator for the program. Over the past five seasons, Clint has been instrumental in the program's success on the field. Maryville has posted a 122-79 record over that time frame winning 61 percent of all challenges. Under his guidance, the pitching staff has posted five consecutive seasons with team earned run averages below 4.15 with a staff low of 3.44 in 2017-18.
"I am extremely humbled by the opportunity to be the head baseball coach at my Alma Mater," stated Helton. "This College has stood strong for 200 years and this baseball program has evolved over the past 143 seasons. Maryville College is and always will be about the people and the opportunity to do good on the greatest scale possible."
Coach Helton continued, "I would like to my Lord and Savior for giving me the opportunity to lead young men. I thank my wife and family for all of the support they have shown me during my life and within the past few weeks. I'd like to thank our administration for believing in the direction of which our program is heading."
"Coach Church left a legacy of the greatest five years in Maryville College baseball history," Helton stated. "We will uphold his legacy and strive forward to develop young men into great stewards of our College, baseball program, and community."
As the Clint Helton era begins, his Fighting Scots diamondmen will prepare for their first game at Berry College on February 4th in Rome, Georgia. MC's first home challenge under Helton's direction will be February 15th when Maryville hosts MacMurray College for a three-game series on Scotland Yard.
