BICENTENNIAL BLITZ: Scots record six sacks, 10 tackles for loss 21-13 Homecoming victory over Methodist

Maryville College blitzed their way to a Homecoming victory on Saturday afternoon, as the Scots defeated Methodist University 21-13 on Honaker Field.

MC celebrated the college's Bicentennial this weekend, as Maryville recorded six sacks and 10 tackles for loss to stymy the Monarchs. The Scots' defensive effort secured the squad's first victory of the 2019 campaign, as they rolled up 341 yards of total offense.

Trenton Cumby had three solo sacks for 23 yards, while Austin Smith tallied a pair for 15 yards. Ronald Eckles and JaCorey Jackson combined for another in the eight-point win.

Leading just 14-13 late in the fourth quarter, Jacob Bunch followed Jace Brittain, Ronald Villalobos and Davien Montgomery who provided a wide-open lane for the sophomore back. Bunch went 20 yards untouched with under 5 minutes left to secure the conference victory.

Bunch ended the day with 179 yards on the ground, as he averaged 6.6 per carry. He had two touchdowns on 27 carries, as the Bean Station, Tenn., native added 17 yards receiving.

Trevor Thomas was 3-of-11 for 71 yards, while Caden Harbin was 5-of-9 for 61 yards. They found Pierre Watkins for 85 yards on two catches.

Tevin Thrower added 18 yards rushing and a score for Maryville.

Jamal Ware had a game-high 13 tackles, four of those going as solo stops. He had a pair of tackles for loss, while Jackson had eight tackles. Braden Cloyd had an interception for 21 yards, while Simeon Watson broke up four passes on the afternoon. The Scots' six sacks went for a loss of 41 yards, as their 10 tackles for loss totaled 49 yards.

Brandon Bullins fought off the sacks on Saturday, as he went 22-of-37 for 207 yards. Xzavier McNeil had seven catches for 68 yards, while Jamarr Moore had six receptions for 61 yards. Vic Woods added 53 yards on four catches.

Vontre Howard added 43 yards on 18 attempts, while Rashawn Green had a touchdown run.

Methodist University (2-3, 1-2 USA South) started the scoring, as they took the opening kickoff for a field goal. The Monarchs used 11 plays to cover 53 yards, as the Scots held Methodist on the Scots' 13-yard line. Trevor Hargett kicked the 30-yard field goal for a 3-0 lead at the 9:45 mark.

Maryville (1-5, 1-2) answered on their next drive. A Hardin to Bunch catch for 17 yards highlighted a 12-play, 94-yard drive, as MC used 35 yards of Methodist penalties. Bunch added a run of 10 yards on the drive, as Thrower covered the final 11. He rushed for a 9-yard touchdown, as Ian Hubbs' extra point made the score 7-3 with 3:49 left in the first quarter.

Methodist took advantage of a Maryville interception, as Nate Jones got the pick. The Monarchs rallied for an 11-play, 37-yard drive that took 4:40 off the clock. Bullins found Moore for a 10-yard reception, before Green covered the final yard on the ground. Methodist led 10-7 with 9:19 left in the half.

The Monarchs would add another score before the half. A nine-play, 43-yard drive was highlighted by catches of 15 and 14 yards by Vic Woods and Howard. Hargett notched a 26-yard field goal as time expired for a 13-7 score at the half.

Maryville answered quickly, however, as they took the opening drive 89 yards in just seven plays. Bunch had a run of 22 yards to start the march, before he ended it with a 3-yard jaunt to pay dirt. Hubbs' kick was good, as Maryville led 14-13 with 12:08 showing in the third quarter.

The scoring went quite, before the Scots punched in the game-winner late in the fourth. The 11-play, 80-yard drive saw Bunch rush for six of the 11 plays. He had 56 yards on the march, as he followed Brittain, Villalobos and Montgomery for the 20-yard score. Maryville claimed the game, 21-13.

The Scots will look to build off this week's Homecoming victory, as they host LaGrange College for a USA South matchup. The game is set for Oct. 26 at 1:00 p.m. on Honaker Field.
