The Maryville College men's basketball team traveled to Rome, Georgia on Monday evening. The Scots snapped their three game losing streak with five players sharing the scoring load and turning away Berry College 83-75 in a key NCAA III South Region non-conference match up.
MC battled to a 14 point lead in the first half and settled for a four point advantage at the intermission. Maryville's defense forced 16 Viking turnovers and out rebounded Berry 30-25 to win the battle of the boards. The Scots found their perimeter touch hitting 11-of-20 (55%) of their three-point attempts.
Berry College (1-4) was paced by Jonathan Abrams' 21 points. He was 8-for-13 from the floor. Lee McCloud deposited a dozen points while Lake Graham and Mac Whalen added 110 and 10 points respectively.
Maryville (3-3) was led by the double-double effort of Oscar Butler. The sophomore had a game-high 11 rebounds while scoring 12 points on 50% shooting. Christian Ford and Wes Lambert were 5-for-10 from beyond the arc with each guard finishing with 13 points. Jaumonee Byrd and Joey Bodewig were both strong in the paint. Byrd was 5-for-6 from the floor for 13 points. Bodewig was 6-for-11 under the basket for 12 points while hauling down five rebounds.
The Scots will return to action on Sunday when the return to USA South action by hosting North Carolina Wesleyan College. Tip-off in the Boydson Baird Gymnasium is scheduled for 2:00.
