The Maryville College men's basketball team dropped their first challenge after the Christmas break with a 73-63 loss to Guilford College on Friday evening in MC's Cooper Athletic Center.
The Scots could not overcome a 27% shooting effort in the first half while not establishing an interior scoring threat. Eleven of Maryville's 21 field goals were from beyond the arc, but the Scots only hit on 28% of their long range attempts.
Guilford (7-2) had four players post double digits in scoring. Josh Pittman recorded a game-high 18 points while grabbing eight rebounds and dishing out seven assists. Matt McCarthy added 13 points while Travis Tracy and Zeb Richardson dropped 11 and 10 points respectively. Richardson tallied a game-high 14 rebounds to help the Quakers out-rebound the Scots 43-41.
Maryville (4-5) accumulated 18 offensive boards but could not capitalize on second shot opportunities. Christian Ford dished out six assists while tossing in a team-high 12 points. Oscar Butler added 10 points and six rebounds. Joey Bodewig paced MC with nine boards which included five offensive rebounds. Jose Agosto and Spencer Shoffner added nine and eight points respectively.
The Scots will host Birmingham Southern on Sunday. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m. in MC's Boydson Baird Gymnasium.
