The Maryville College men battled USA South leader Christopher Newport on Saturday evening in Newport News, Virginia, but ultimately fell to the 13-2 Captains by the score of 79-71.
MC showcased 28 points off the bench, including a 16 point explosion from freshman Spencer Shoffner. CNU countered with an amazing 57% shooting effort in the second half to outscore the Scots 51-43 in the final period. The Captains capitalized on their 52-40 rebound margin tossing in 20 second chance points to secure the victory.
Christopher Newport (13-2, 6-1 USA South) had a pair of players pace them in scoring. Nik Biberaj was 10-for-16 from the field and finished with a double-double with 24 points and 16 rebounds. Tra Benefield added 19 points and seven boards. Mike Cherry tossed in 10 points and eight boards.
Maryville (7-9, 3-5 USA South) had four players in double digits. Shoffner was 6-for-12 on the evening with four treys to secure 16 points. Oscar Butler and Christian Ford each tossed in a dozen points. Butler led MC on the boards with eight rebounds. Jethro Griffin contributed 10 points as the Scots went 11-for-26 (42%) from beyond the arc, but finished collectively 22-for-68 (32%) from the floor.
The Scots will complete their weekend USA South swing through North Carolina with a 4:00 challenge on Sunday at North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount, North Carolina.
