Scots defeat Greensboro 85-84 for key USA South road victory

Maryville College junior guard Joshua Brooks deposited his 17th point on a free throw with two seconds remaining to give the Fighting Scots a thrilling 85-84 USA South road victory over Greensboro College in Greensboro, North Carolina on Saturday afternoon.


The Scots used a 61% shooting effort in the first half (20-for-33) that included seven three-pointers for a 53-43 before the intermission. A three-pointer by Calvin Songster at the 9:40 mark gave MC their largest lead of eleven (31-20) before Greensboro's Carmoni Marks helped the Pride with a 15-point first half effort on 6-of-8 shooting. At the intermission, Maryville was paced by Joshua Brooks, Emanuelle Garcia, and Kaleb Estes. Each tossed in a dozen points for a combined 13-for-19 shooting effort including a collective four treys.


Greensboro closed the gap in the second period with a 9-0 run following a Songster trey. Jordan Griswould's three-pointer off the bench gave MC a five-point cushion at the 12:15 mark but over the next eight minutes, the Pride went on a 13-3 run tying the game 75-75 on a Justin Minnis bucket and free throw. A pair of three-pointers by Minnnis and Michael Phifer were countered by A trey by MC's Songster and key baskets by Joshua Brooks and Kaleb Estes.


With the game tied at 84-84 on a Carmoni Marks free throw, Brooks drove the lane within the final seconds drawing the shooting foul. After missing the initial attempt, Brooks drained the game-winner.


Greensboro (1-6, 0-2 USA South) had four players post double digits in scoring. Carmoni Marks finished with 23 points on 8-of-12 shooting. He added a team-high nine rebounds. Michael Phifer added 22 on 6-of-12 shooting.  Justin Minnis tossed in 20 points on 7-of-13 shooting. Keyford Langley dished out 10 assists while adding 10 points for the Pride.


Maryville (2-4, 1-1 USA South) saw Emanuelle Garcia drop a team-high 19 points on 7-of-14 shooting including a trio of treys. Joshua Brooks and Calvin Songster each deposited 17 points. Brooks shot 60% from the floor while Songster hit 5-of-7 from the floor including four three-pointers. Kaleb Estes added 16 points, four assists, and four rebounds.


Maryville will travel to Fayetteville, North Carolina on Sunday to challenge USA South foe Methodist University. Tip-off is slated for 3:00 p.m.
