The Raul Placeres era within the Maryville College Men's Basketball program will begin with a bang on November 5th as the Fighting Scots will travel to Middle Tennessee State University to challenge the NCAA Division I Blue Raiders in an exhibition in Murfreesboro, Tennessee.
The Scots are coming off back-to-back USA South Athletic Conference tournament championships qualifying for the program's 19th and 20th trips to the NCAA postseason. Maryville finished the 2018-19 campaign 21-8. MTSU finished last season 11-22 while going 8-10 in the challenging Conference USA.
During the past eight seasons with Placeres' guidance as an assistant, the Scots claimed a Great South Athletic Conference championship (2011-12), a trio of USA South Athletic Conference regular-season titles (2013-14, 2016-17, 2017-18), a pair of USA South tournament titles (2017-18, 2018-19), and three NCAA tournament appearances (2011-12, 2017-18, 2018-19).
Over the past three seasons, Maryville College has posted 63 victories, the most of any men's basketball team within the NCAA Division III South Region.
"This is the most athletic, tallest, and longest team we have had at Maryville since our 2003-04 Sweet 16 team", stated Coach Placeres.
The Scots return a trio of starters highlighted by senior point guard Josh Brooks. Rising sophomores Nicholas Clifton and JP McGhee have excelled in the post. Look for Jordan Griswould and Kevin Chong to mature their shooting touch while the extent of the freshman class will be looked upon to contribute right away.
Maryville will open their regular season November 16-17 hosting the Randy Lambert Classic that will include Johnson University, Webster University, and Piedmont College. The complete schedule can be found at: http://www.mcscots.com/sports/mbkb/2019-20/schedule
