Scots lead MC Invitational after first round behind solid play from Bray and Manuel

The Maryville College men's golf squad blistered the Egwani Farms Golf Course with a 289-team effort to set the pace in the first round of the Maryville College Invitational on Monday afternoon. The Scots lead the eight-team tournament by 20 strokes after the initial 18-hole challenge. Emory & Henry College sits in second place with a 309 while Southern Virginia University is tied with Covenant College in third place with a 310.

Individually, Maryville's Tyler Bray and Wil Manuel are atop the leaderboard with first-round scores of 69. Maryville's Andy Cofer, playing on the "B" squad for the Scots, is in third place with a strong round of 71. The Scots' Garrett Compliment finished with a 72 to help MC claim the top four individual performances of the first round.

The Scots attacked the 6,432-yard course with 14 team birdies. Manuel and Bray each tallied five birdies while Compliment recorded three birdies. Cofer paced the field with 15 pars on the afternoon.

"Bringing Andy on board this season has provided our team a push to be more competitive each week during practice and matches," stated Wil Manuel. "Our goal was to be in the Top-25 after the fall season and we are 31st presently, so we are getting close to that program goal."

"It's always good to end the fall season on a positive note," stated Andy Cofer. "This will allow us to evaluate what we need to work on during the off-season to have a successful spring."

"I think some of the guys played pretty well today," stated Head Coach Ron Waters. "Andy's 71 will be a big boost to his confidence. Wil and Tyler did what I expected and I look forward to seeing that consistency carry over to the second round. Garrett Compliment had a solid round of 72 after returning from an illness. If we remain consistent on Tuesday and close out the tournament, it will be a great way to close out the fall season."

The Maryville Invitational will conclude on Tuesday with a 10:30 a.m. tee time.
