The Maryville College men's golf program finished the first round of the Tom Kinder Memorial Classic in fifth place among 17 NCAA Division III competing institutions.
McDaniel College leads the field with a 290 over the Mountain/Lake course at the Lakeview Golf Club in Harrisonburg, Virginia.
Maryville finished eight-over par with a team 296, just six shots off the lead.
Ferrum College's Hunter Shelton tallied a three-under par 69 to lead individual honors.
MC sophomore Andy Cofer, from Knoxville Halls High School, paced the squad with an even-par score of 72. His efforts have him in sixth place only three shots off the lead.
Maryville junior Brady Orr, from Seymour, Tennessee, recorded a 74, only five shots off the leader's pace.
Jacob Dunlap and Jake Duncan completed the scoring for the Scots each tied for 31st place with a three-over par 75. Garrett Compliment finished the initial round with a 78 placing 55th after 18 holes.
The tournament in Harrisonburg features 87 NCAA Division III golfers. It is scheduled to conclude on Tuesday evening.
